This is a podcast series that was born out of the Moving Biography Summer School, organized by LAWHA/OIB, the American University of Beirut and the Global (De)Centre in 2022, and generously funded by the Volkswagen Foundation. The summer school brought together different perspectives to question disciplinary assumptions and decenter life writing. As an outcome of the Summer School, LAWHA partnered with The Institute of Art in the Arab World (IAAW) at the Lebanese American University to produce a series of podcasts under the title On Women by Women in Art, conceived and moderated by IAAW’s director Yasmine Taan. In each of the four episodes of the first sub-series titled "On Women By Women in Art", a woman artist reflects on another woman artist who influenced and inspired her practice. Episode 1 features Samar Mogharbel on Dorothy Salhab Kazemi (1 September 2023), episode 2 Greta Naufal on Yvette Achkar (29 September 2023), episode 3 Afaf Zurayk on Helen Khal (27 October 2023), and episode 4 Samia Halaby on Mona Saudi (24 November 2023). The second sub-series, Moving Biographies, is a direct outcome of the discussions held at the summer school in June 2022. Each of the three episodes is moderated by one of the co-organisers of the summer school. The first episode – Curating an Artist’s (and Parent’s) Biography (15 September 2023) – is an edited version of life presentations that took place at the OIB in May 2023. In this episode with Mahita El Bacha Urieta, Manuella Guiragossian and Hala Schoukair, the daughters of Amine El Bacha (1932-2019), Paul Guiragossian (1926-1993) and Saloua Raouda Choucair (1916-2017) – leading artists of Lebanon’s art world – talk about the responsibility of taking care of their parent’s legacy, what challenges they face and what it means to curate a biography that is intrinsically linked to their own. The second episode – Vulnerability and the Capacity for Life: Biography as a Material Matter (13 October 2023) – consists of conversations Kirsten Scheid (Professor of Art and Anthropology at AUB) held with summer school participants Daniel Schönpflug (Historian at Wissenschaftskolleg zu Berlin) and Yvonne Albers (Freie Universität Berlin) to think about biography as a material matter. In the final episode – Evelyne Bustros (1878-1971): Patron of the Arts and Crafts (10 November 2023) – Sonja Mejcher-Atassi (Professor of Modern Arabic and Comparative Literature at AUB) talks to Sarah Sabban (PhD Candidate in History at AUB) about her doctoral research on the life of Evelyne Bustros (1878-1971) and how it was entwined with the formation of Lebanese heritage and early nation-building in Lebanon. The podcasts were produced in collaboration with afikra, a movement to convert passive interest in the Arab world to active intellectual curiosity.

What is Radio Luftballet? Radio Luftballet—anchored at the Western Norway University of Applied Sciences (HVL)—is a place for imagining new worlds and sharing people’s stories about how we can contribute to the transition to a more sustainable society. Radio Luftballet hopes to open up connections and collaborations between the many sectors—cultural, commercial, social, political—working on transitions within their fields. In this project we wish to keep alive the historic ambitions of utopian thinking. But instead of creating fiction, we aim to enhance and promote already existing initiatives and bring attention to those at work on their tasks. What is transition? Around the world people are searching for pathways out of the carbon-intensive era. Transition takes many forms and is approached from many different angles. There must be a transition not only within the energy sector, but in most aspects of how we live our lives. Why do we need a transition? This year atmospheric concentrations of the greenhouse gases in the atmosphere have surged at a record breaking speed and carbon dioxide levels have reached the highest level in 800,000 years. Humans have played the substantial part in this unprecedented increase. Human-induced climate change affects us all, however, there are a lot of things that can be done and the actions we take over the next few years will have massive consequences for those directly affected by climate change. Is this an art project? ​Yes. Within the arts there is a strong tradition of imagining better worlds. Thomas More’s book Utopia, published in 1516, describes an imaginary island without private property and inspired policies and politics for years to come. William Morris, a textile artist and founder of the Arts and Crafts movement, described his craft-rich ideal society in 1888 in News From Nowhere. Ernest Callenbach inspired the politics of the German Green Party through his book Ecotopia (1975), which describes his ideal view of a society located in Oregon. Is this something more than an art project? Yes. Framed within an art project, this is an interdisciplinary collaboration aimed at developing new forms of Transition Communication. We acknowledge that climate change is a complex issue that overlaps cultural, political, ethical, and psychological issues, and often appears daunting. We hope that in light of the complexity of transition, stories create a space for making changes in real life. Narratives provide a way for us to imagine our way out of the carbon-intensive era. Radio Luftballet strongly believes that the stories we share are part of the solution. Who are we? Radio Luftballet consists of Radio Luftballet initiator, Margrethe Kolstad Brekke, located in Bergen, Norway; Climate Change Management Master’s Program students, Calum Macintyre, Adam Gairns and Victoria Slaymark, located in Sogndal, Norway; and poet Alicia Cohen, located in Portland, Oregon. We hope the interdisciplinary of the project will generate a creative space from which to take a step back from our professional perspectives. We hope to form common human ground, distill the essence of transition stories and evaluate and discuss what we find to be effective Transition Communication. ​ Radio Luftballett is produced by Margrethe Kolstad Brekke/KORO Vågestykke. Radio Luftballet—anchored at the Western Norway University of Applied Sciences (HVL)—is a place for imagining new worlds and sharing people’s stories about how we can contribute to the transition to a more sustainable society. Radio Luftballet hopes to open up connections and collaborations between the many sectors—cultural, commercial, social, political—working on transitions within their fields. In this project we wish to keep alive the historic ambitions of utopian thinking. But instead of creating fiction, we aim to enhance and promote already existing initiatives and bring attention to those at work on their tasks.



What is transition?



Around the world people are searching for pathways out of the carbon-intensive era. Transition takes many forms and is approached from many different angles. There must be a transition not only within the energy sector, but in most aspects of how we live our lives.



Why do we need a transition?



This year atmospheric concentrations of the greenhouse gases in the atmosphere have surged at a record breaking speed and carbon dioxide levels have reached the highest level in 800,000 years. Humans have played the substantial part in this unprecedented increase. Human-induced climate change affects us all, however, there are a lot of things that can be done and the actions we take over the next few years will have massive consequences for those directly affected by climate change.



Is this an art project?



​Yes.



Within the arts there is a strong tradition of imagining better worlds. Thomas More’s book&nbsp;Utopia, published in 1516, describes an imaginary island without private property and inspired policies and politics for years to come. William Morris, a textile artist and founder of the Arts and Crafts movement, described his craft-rich ideal society in 1888 in&nbsp;News From Nowhere. &nbsp;Ernest Callenbach inspired the politics of the German Green Party through his book&nbsp;Ecotopia&nbsp;(1975), which describes his ideal view of a society located in Oregon.



Is this something more than an art project?


Yes.



Framed within an art project, this is an interdisciplinary collaboration aimed at developing new forms of Transition Communication.&nbsp;



We acknowledge that climate change is a complex issue that overlaps cultural, political, ethical, and psychological issues, and often appears daunting. We hope that in light of the complexity of transition, stories create a space for making changes in real life. Narratives provide a way for us to imagine our way out of the carbon-intensive era. Radio Luftballet strongly believes that the stories we share are part of the solution.



Who are we?



Radio Luftballet consists of Radio Luftballet initiator, Margrethe Kolstad Brekke,&nbsp;located in Bergen, Norway;&nbsp;Climate Change Management Master’s Program students, Calum Macintyre, Adam Gairns and Victoria Slaymark, located in Sogndal, Norway; and poet Alicia Cohen, located in Portland, Oregon.&nbsp;



We hope the interdisciplinary of the project will generate a creative space from which to take a step back from our professional perspectives. We hope to form common&nbsp;human ground, distill the essence of transition stories and evaluate and discuss what we find to be effective Transition Communication.

This was the Weekly Poetry project for January 9th, 2011.William Morris was an English textile designer, artist, writer, and socialist associated with the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood and the English Arts and Crafts Movement. Morris wrote and published poetry, fiction, and translations of ancient and medieval texts throughout his life.Today, Morris's poetry is little-read. His fantasy romances languished out of print for decades until their rediscovery amid the great fantasy revival of the late 1960s following the phenomenal success of Tolkien's Lord of the Rings. But his textile and wallpaper designs remain a staple of the Arts and Crafts Revival of the turn of the 21st century, and the reproduction of Morris designs as fabric, wrapping paper, and craft kits of all sorts is testament to the enduring appeal of his work. The William Morris Societies in Britain, the US, and Canada are active in preserving Morris's work and ideas.
