  • Episode 51: Best Supporting Birthday
It has somehow been a whole year since we started queening out on our favorite Best Supporting Actresses, whether it be acclaimed performances by Rita Moreno or Allison Janney or more obscure appearances by Tyne Daly and Carolina Aaron that we just can't stop thinking about. This week, we're looking back on our favorite ladies and episodes of the first year of Best Supporting Podcast, including the gasp heard round the world, the hours spent on The Hours, our Ingrid Bergman-fueled awakening, the rise of Alexis Rose and a card game in Staten Island that we could watch all night. These are the BSA's of the First Year of the BSP!

  • Episode 50: Tovah Feldshuh - "Kissing Jessica Stein" (2001)
There’s much to marinate on in “Kissing Jessica Stein,” the 2001 bi-curious gem of a romantic comedy that gave us “sexy ugly,” an early Jon Hamm in a small role (to say nothing of Idina Menzel!), Scott Cohen’s great hair and questionable donut eating, a radical Jackie Hoffman nearly stealing the show as best friend Joan, and strong feelings about Jennifer Westfeldt. But most importantly, we get The Bench Scene and Tovah Feldshuh’s oy’ing and kibitzing Judy Stein, a noodge of a mother with a wealth of acting choices and one perfect pause that we can’t stop kvelling over.

  • Episode 49: Emmy's 2020 + PEN15 Season 2
It was a Schitty night at the Emmy's earlier this week, with the beloved Canadian cult hit sweeping the comedy category. We were thrilled to see both Catherine O'Hara and Annie Murphy finally get the recognition they deserve, as well as Dan Levy's boundless joy and bewilderment throughout. Then we shift to what will hopefully be a future Emmy winner, Season 2 (part one!) of PEN15. We process the shift in tone and celebrate the Gabe narrative, the accuracy of Maura, the importance of the parents and the genius recreation of being in a middle school play. Plus: some love for Taco Bell, a cozy new throwdown and an acceptance speech fit for a queen.

  • Episode 48: "Pen15"
We're veering off of strictly supporting actress talk this week to take a trip down the often awkward, misunderstood and hilarious memory lane of "Pen15," Maya Erskine and Anna Konkle's ode to middle school at the turn of the millennium. We queen out on the fashion, the music, the nuances of children of divorce, fighting with your best friend, our own experiences being friends with all girls, navigating our own burgeoning sexualities at that age, discovering porn and the importance of learning lessons the hard way. Plus: Jan the janitor, Anna and Maya's perfectly cast parents, a delightfully delusional Laura Kightlinger, that one gay kid, the perfectly dreadful Becca, and of course, best supporting friends Anna and Maya.

  • Episode 47: Andrea Martin - "My Big Fat Greek Wedding" (2002)
Nia Vardalos’s one woman show turned multimillion dollar blockbuster “My Big Fat Greek Wedding” has something for everyone: a charming central love story, relatable immigrant family dynamics, culture clashes solved with ouzo and lamb, and a 90 minute runtime. And for us, it includes Lainie Kazan’s party blouse, John Corbett’s gallant patience (and questionable hair length), and of course, Andrea Martin’s Best Supporting Aunt energy as the kooky Voula. From her sororal lump to her nuanced tweezing, we had a big, fat hoot this week queening out on Martin’s most memorable moments, plus a celebration of other funny ladies we love this week, and yes, more Smash updates.

  • Episode 46: The BSA's of "A League of Their Own" (1992)
Penny Marshall's feel-great, cry-hard 1992 classic "A League of Their Own" has an all-star lineup of women (and men!) in its ensemble, a home run of a score by Hans Zimmer, and a 7th inning stretch of dancing at the Suds Bucket that could go all the way. This week we're celebrating our favorite performances and moments, including a Hooch family weep fest at the train station, Bitty Shramm's contribution to the infamous "no crying in baseball scene," Tom Hanks and Geena Davis's chemistry, Betty Spaghetti and the telegram scene, the Madonna monster behind the scenes, and our evolving feelings about Kit. Plus: a garlicky grandma, a Smashing disaster, and another week of love for an old pal.

  • Episode 45: Ann Dowd - "Hereditary" (2018)
Toni Collette gives such a powerhouse performance in Ari Aster's dysfunctional family nightmare "Hereditary" that it's easy to forget the ingenious Ann Dowd as the insidious Joan, luring Annie down the rabbit hole to hell. While we have just as much to say about Toni Collette this week, we zoom in on Dowd's Best Supporting Antichrist, the many parallels to "Rosemary's Baby," "Poltergeist" and even "Texas Chainsaw Massacre," Alex Wolff's haunting portrayal of Peter, the unique casting of Milly Shapiro, the best moments from that dinner table scene, jumping out of windows, giving birth to grief, and why Olivia Colman should have been apologizing to Toni at the Oscars that year. Plus: a favorite former Nickelodeon ranch hand, a shoeless chef with messy fingers, and even more love for a previous BSA of the Week.

  • Episode 44: The BSA's of "Pride & Prejudice" (2005)
We're receiving every Bennet in the country this week as we count down our Top 5 BSA's of "the Keira Knightley" version of "Pride & Prejudice"! We explore the nuances of period pieces that give Colin pause, Emma Thompson's important contributions to the script, so many sweaty bangs, the gruesome twosome of Kitty and Lyddie, and of course all of our favorite performances--from the subtle cattiness of Kelly Reilly to the batty brilliance of Brenda Blethyn. (To say nothing of Judi Dench!) Also, how do you pronounce the name Rosamund Pike? We also discuss Donald Sutherland's laughter through tears, a Pride & Prejudice bus tour, movie tropes we hate, the problem with ren faires, Miranda Richardson, Olivia Colman's best moments in Broadchurch, a bloodsucking Tilda Swinton, and one of the most un-difficult people to love.

  • Episode 43: Elaine Stritch - "Original Cast Album: Company" (1970)
This long-lost documentary about the original cast album recording of "Company" is finally available, and not only features a smoldering Stephen Sondheim (that smile!), the oddly alluring Donna McKechnie, Pamela Myers struggling to find the "bubi," Beth Howland perfecting the patter, and Barbara Barrie's sunglasses, but the indomitable Elaine Stritch. Proving that some women do still wear hats with that white "dump hat," she conducts from the chorus, drinks with the men, smiles in the ensemble, and fights to nail "Ladies Who Lunch" all the way till breakfast. We also discuss our own spotty histories with Sondheim, which number we'd like to see performed by drag queens, our feelings on Patti LuPone as Joanne, and the strange batch of Tony nominations this show got. In the words of Susan Browning, it could drive a person crazy....

  • Episode 42: The BSA's of "Wet Hot American Summer" (2001)
While this 2001 absurdist comedy cult classic may work best as stoner cinema, it's full of great performances from a cast of soon-to-be stars. This week, we each pick our 5 nominees for Best Supporting Actor/Actress, with some pleasant surprises on each list, share our own feelings on the summer camp experience, and show much appreciation for Christopher Meloni's wardrobe before fully queening out on "Dead to Me" because, frankly, that just needed to happen this week.
