Beth & Steve's Mondays

The curent Ai music generating software is getting frighteningly good.  A year ago I still thought it would never be acceptable but it is now creating music that sounds like something one would hear on the radio.  Easy peasy...they listened to everything ever recorded and digested it all to make tasty treats that tickle all of the tastebuds.  Feels so much like a snickers bar or a cheeseburger with no talent, work, blood, sweat or tears.  Seems so human with no bad traits or smells.  Well I think the only way to fight that is to stop trying to sound like what everyone wants and get back to making what the artist wants without the fear of being too different.  It is actually making me feel very free.  Well of course if you want to take the route there is a very good chance that you will also be doing it for free.  But I woul rather die with my boots on than walking barefoot over the hot coals of chasing acceptable tastes.  There I said it!  I think this is a fun journey into the living flesh of human creativity.

We all need to have a bubble to live in.  It’s how we can see beauty and find joy.  It is a home for our soul to reside in and to look out the window, protected from the wild beasts and inclement weather outside.  It is getting extremely difficult to stay safe within with all of the disrupters constantly trying to pop our bubble and flood us with hatred and distractions for their own benefit.  And now Ai will begin giving us best friends who will tell us exactly what we want to hear and actually isolate us further into bubbles of their making, erasing true friends who tell us what we need to hear.

!33 has a new song by Clay Berryhill sung by Nick-I called Bitchen Girl and it's...BITCHEN!  Honestly, wait around long enought and everything old is new again.  Oh wait that doesn't work for people (sad emoji here).  Also find 2 other unreleased (and not quite finished) 133 songs along with a few of Beth and Steve's tunes in the rough early stages and last but not least, 2 tunes from a couple of our favorite  Tuesday artists.  Real backstage, behind the scenes stuff if you are interested in that kind of stuff.  I am but I accept that not everyone is like me.  But maybe this episode will change you.

Long time beyond local legend Nick-I joins Beth and Steve to edumacate us about his path to what he has become today...legendary member of Common Sense and 133, skimboarder, surfer, fisherman, man about many towns and rocanteur.  Hang hang with 3 very experienced pro musicians as they shoot the shit and spin some discs.

Laguna's favorite balladeer, strolling minstrel, sitting spinner of musical yarns, joins Beth and Steve with his wife Carrie to give some insight into his music and history.  Fun to speak with someone you think you know well and then when you start to interview them, you realize there is a lot you don't know.  This is one of the great things about being able to do this show every week.  Lots of local history.  Thanks to Mary Hurlbut for this great photo of George at one of his countless Sawdust gigs.  Don't know how long he's been playing there but it has to be 40 years +.  Guess we will have to do another show to find out.

In this episode Beth and Steve throw a good old listening party, this one primarily relying on one of Steve's "favorite discoveries" playlists.  It's so hard to find good new music out there but B+S are musical gardeners who get their ears dirty and pull all the weeds (really hard to do with one's ears), leaving just a beatiful bed of musical flowers.

Steve goes Bethless for this episode.  I decided to dig into some of my IMAX film scores that I did with my longitme buddy Greg MacGillivray.  Starting with the wonderful experiences Beth and I had In Athens Greece, then onto a song that Sting wrote and I produced for the film "Dolphins".  Then to jolly old England where Beth and I worked with Brian May after which he gave us the royal treatment of excellent seats in the West End to see the musical "We Will Rock You" about his home made guitar that Beth got to play.  Then off to the far South Pacific to record music with native musicians in Papua.  Wow, talk about jet lag.

Beth and Steve spin some tales and tunes from "The Girls" a long time favorite in these parts consisting of Carolyn Miller, Sue Bredice and Beth Fitchet Wood.  What's not to love about a trio of lovely, intelligent and hysterically funny women?  There's nothing not to like!  Wait is that a double negative?  No, it's a double positive!

Beth and I spend a lot of time making music for obscure projects or often just for fun and we don't post them anywhere.  I mean the fun is in the making and it's work to try to get people to pay one iota of attention.  Not whining, just try to get me to pay 1/2 of an iota.  Here are some members of that wooly and unruly menagerie, from Beth's song about almost dying from hypothermia in the frigid waters of New Hampshire to Steve singing a duet with Vanessa Williams and his incredible ability to not look at her butt...and the stories to go along with them.
