Speaker: Pastor Marty Beamer • Series: Philippians • Date: Apr 24, 2022
Big idea: True gain is knowing Christ—experiencing the power of His resurrection now and sharing in His sufferings, being conformed to His death, so that life spreads to others. (Phil 3:10–11; Ezekiel 37)
Summary
From Ezekiel’s valley of dry bones to Paul’s “that I may know Him,” Pastor Marty shows that God’s resurrection power doesn’t just raise corpses—it raises the spiritually dead. Paul longs for an intimate, lived knowledge of Christ, not mere facts: knowing Christ’s resurrection power that frees us from sin and propels mission, and fellowshipping in His sufferings, daily dying to pride, status, and self-rule. This is how a church becomes a place where God brings the dead to life—when we stop seeking our own glory, serve others, and obey the Father.
Key points
Knowing vs. knowing about: Christian knowledge is relational and experiential (Acts 9; John 17:3).Resurrection power (present): New birth, freedom from sin’s dominion, courage and endurance for gospel mission (Rom 6; Eph 1:18–20).Suffering with Christ: To know His power is to share His sufferings—becoming like Him in His death (Phil 3:10); daily self-denial, service, and obedience (Phil 2:5–11).Guard against legalism & pride: Our righteousness is from God by faith—Christ’s life imputed to us; we bring nothing to boast in (Phil 3:9; Rom 5).Mission overflow: As we “carry the death of Jesus,” His life is manifested in others (2 Cor 4:10–12)—joyful gospel advancement.
