Better Being Me

Better being a neuro diverse Mum with Joanne Hatchard

Listen Later

Host Joanne Hatchard welcomes us to the Better Being Me podcast with a poignant reflection of some of her personal journey. She shares with us her early years of feeling awkward and the visceral relief a diagnosis of dyslexia in high school gifted her in such a turbulent time. After years of anxiety attacks and painful comments she comically recalls a disastrous experience of Hypnotherapy that led to a remarkable discovery; touch is a foundational need for her to offload and transfer tension, a healing balm she still uses to this day. Becoming pregnant was a pivotal point of transformation for Jo, as she tells us how she learnt the hard way that managing expectations as a first time Mum quickly renders you lost and resentful and how her son’s diagnosis of Autism helped her discover she identified as a nuero-diverse woman. Finding resonance in researching women on the spectrum, mourning the life that could have been but never was, and finding strength in the comfort and clarity that she was in fact – a highly intelligent, high level of spatial reasoning skilled woman  - allowed avenues of potential and a new exploration of pathways to begin. Through this she discovered that ‘stress states’ are an extreme example of personality traits – in essence an expression of the mind – and dove deep into them unlocking the gift of just how great an indicator they are, on how to monitor your own behaviour and external stress responses. With fun and wit, she unpacks for us how she truly discovered who she really was in her hearts of hearts, surrendering in forgiveness who she was trying to gain approval from and giving herself permission to not only ask for help but unapologetically thrive!
