The scale of history is huge, the timeframe is long, and the measurements are often intentionally corrupted. After all, history is written by the winners, can be influenced by many factors, and needs to be verified. This verification comes through the analysis of historiography, which is the study of historical recordkeeping.
It is important to look at history to understand these trajectories because history is a cryptic epic of twisting trajectories →
1) Cryptic because narrators are unreliable and often intentionally misleading
2) Epic because the timescales are so long that you have to consciously sample beyond your own experience and any human lifetime to see patterns
3) Twisting because there are curves, cycles, collapses, and non-straight patterns
4) Trajectories because history is ultimately about the time evolution of human beings

Bitcoin, network states, and biased algorithms: how do they relate? Is it time we implement higher data standards in tech?
This week’s episode not only answers these questions but does so with our very first guest. Severin Deutschmann, Founder and Managing Director of OpenTelos.com, shares his thoughts on:
- network states enabling bottom-up regulation
If anyone can build a network state, which both Balaji Srinivasan and Severin Deutschman suggest is true, then isn’t it imperative that we redefine tech standards to ensure accountability among tech companies?
Balaji and Severin both share their thoughts on what makes a good network state leader. In short, you must have good intentions and strong communication skills. Using the network state for good means a leader should be able to organize, delegate, and execute tasks within the network state, while optimizing value proposition.
Unsurprisingly, most companies allow algorithmic bias to slip into their code and influence their digital marketing campaigns. Rather than resolve this issue, companies intentionally use algorithmic targeting as a way to increase profits - despite the negative repercussions their algorithms cause, even if that means inciting violence online.
What’s the trade-off? Share your thoughts in the comments!

Are leaders prioritizing the right metrics?
Why does history matter for startups?
There’s a lot to consider here. While many might argue that profit should be prioritized above all else, many also oppose this claim, suggesting that people’s happiness matters more than monetary value.
This episode will cover our thoughts on the following topics:
If history is written by the victors, can we be sure that history offers us the answers we need to become better leaders?
This episode discusses whether societies should focus on moral issues or on prioritizing monetary value. The happiness advantage states that the most important indicator of success should be the happiness metric. This is because leaders prioritizing happiness tend to see more profit and activity in their societies, as well as the mere emotional advantage that comes with being content.
This is an interesting point since happier societies are also oftentimes more inclusive and welcoming societies. This means that we need to demand that the history we learn from is an inclusive history, a representative history, and one which shares a dynamic perspective, drawing on inclusive historical records, rather than a one-sided narrative. With this approach, there is no reason we cannot learn how to address any economic problem at hand.

Why does history matter? How do we know if society is broken or not?
What’s the point in keeping track of everything that’s happened before?
How does history influence the present and future?
The Network State by Balaji Srinivasan makes the case that history is crucial for several reasons:
In part one of this episode we covered:
- How History is how you win the argument. Winning arguments need more than pure logic alone; you need facts, so you need history.
- How History determines legality.
- How History determines morality.
- How History is how you develop compelling media.
- How History is the true value of cryptocurrency.
- How History tells you who’s in charge.
We explored how new network states should treat or teach their history. And whether on-chain records make it impossible to lie. We also dived into what history tells us about how radical truth, honesty, and transparency would work at scale using examples from companies doing it today.
Today, in part 2 of "Why history is crucial" we cover:
- History determines your hiring policy.
- Founders need to know history in order to have the moral authority and maneuverability to make the best decisions
- How History is how you debug our broken society.
We’re just starting out and could really use your support, so, if you like this episode, please lightly and lovingly caress that like button, share this episode, comment, and sign up for our newsletter, I promise we’ll make it worth it for you!

Leaders cannot exist without followers. But followers cannot be coerced. A good boss must be a good leader. If not, followers will desert or mutiny and find a new leader. This is the eternal dynamic between a leader versus a boss. And leaders versus followers.
Traditionally, the mark of a strong tech company has been its innovation first, and company culture second. However, when it comes to creating a startup society, you have to start with community culture first and then cultural innovation.
Cultural innovation means probing the past and learning from it.
In this episode of the Network State Podcast, we uncover how human history is the basis for understanding the way we interact with each other. With a strong insight into the history that shaped us, we highlight what rules have guided us to where we are today.
As we dive deeper into how to build a new society, we retrace the steps of how countries were built in the first place.
Finally, from the point of view of an entrepreneur, we analyze how much easier it is to use the iPhone, one of the most advanced handheld devices on the market versus being the founder of the company that makes iPhones, Apple Inc, one of the most successful companies of all time.
In this episode, you will learn the following:
1. How startup societies are different from startups
2. How learning from history makes you a better leader vs boss
3. How starting a startup society is much harder than using its products, to be a leader vs follower
Topics Covered:
- technological innovation first vs company culture
- leader vs boss
- startup societies vs startups
- innovating on technology means forecasting the future
- innovating on culture means probing the past
- History is the closest thing we have to a physics of humanity
- how countries were built in the first place
- the logistics of the process
- leader vs follower
- how history teaches us
- how history teaches founders
- iPhone customer vs Apple Inc founders

What happens when China takes over as the dominant world power? How does the changing world order affect your day-to-day life? How and why are people starting new countries today?
Well, The Network State Podcast believes you deserve answers… or at least some passionate opinions from our expert guests.
Every Thursday, Adrien Harrison and Raphaël Benros unpack Balaji S. Srinivasan’s “The Network State”, a manifesto for building new kinds of nation-states and the implications of such dramatic shifts in the balance of global powers, for humanity today and its future generations.
With backgrounds in entrepreneurship, philosophy, web 3, international relations, and law, these best friends and their extraordinary guests explain how this technology works and how it can disrupt global industries, international trade, and geopolitical diplomacy – as well as the psychological implications for everyone minding their daily lives, and the opportunities for aspiring entrepreneurs – debating each point with a hint of humor to lighten the mood.
Aside from tactfully maneuvering through existential risks and unsettling moral quandaries, guests enjoy the show because it’s friendly, long-form, and endlessly fascinating. This leads to extremely open, raw discussions and — paradoxically — fewer edits.
Press outlets have included the podcast in their list of “suggestions to make you remember the world can be a good place.” It’s about positive outlooks you can use, not fearmongering or other B.S. The Internet has enough of that, and we wanted to do something to reverse the trend. So bring your popcorn and an open mind, then let us blow it for you 🙂

In this episode, we’ll explore the concept of The Network State popularized by Balaji Srinivasan.
The podcast is about the concept of a network state and how it is possible to start your own country from scratch. We learn that a network state is a highly aligned online community with a capacity for collective action that crowdfunds territory around the world and eventually gains diplomatic recognition from preexisting states.
In this episode, you will learn the following:
1. It is now possible for anyone to start their own country, thanks to recent advancements in technology.
2. A "network state" is a highly aligned online community with a capacity for collective action that crowdfunds territory around the world and eventually gains diplomatic recognition from preexisting states.
3. Most countries in the past have been created through an election, revolution, war, micronations, or space colonization - but the network state takes advantage of existing internet infrastructure to bypass many of these obstacles.
