In this episode, we speak with Michel André, founder of Sense of Silence, and Soraya Hidalgo Hidalgo about their work at the forefront of bioacoustics - the study of how living organisms produce, transmit, and receive sound.
Their globally dispersed acoustic observatories act as artificial ears, using microphones and hydrophones to continuously record soundscapes on land and at sea. This audio data is then analyzed by machine learning algorithms to classify different species' vocalizations amidst ambient environmental sounds.
By reconstructing these "soundscapes", researchers gain unprecedented insights into biodiversity and ecosystem health across diverse regions like the Amazon rainforest, polar regions, and marine protected areas. The long-term monitoring can detect changes from threats like deforestation, climate change, and noise pollution.
As Michel explains, "If hearing is the sense most universally shared by life on Earth, then acoustics is essential for measuring the pulse of nature's health and our own survival."
Beyond the scientific insights, the Sense of Silence team hopes to reawaken humanity's appreciation for the natural symphonies around us. As Soraya recounts her experience in the Amazon, "When you close your eyes at night, you hear this beautiful, perfect orchestra of animals, insects, the trees swaying. You feel we must preserve these ecosystems."
Our planetary life-support systems are under strain, but by learning to listen to nature's orchestra, we can harmonize our role as a more conscious force for sustainability. Join us for this fascinating discussion at the intersection of science, technology, and conservation.

# About Better Worlds
We believe that the digital transformation and related technologies are revolutionizing the very nature of the way we live and who we are. Done right, these innovations can help lead us to a better world. We're here to bring together the people and the tools to help you build it.
One key focus of our mission is to explore how the innovations of Web3, Ai, and Quantum Computing can help to sustain the natural world and build greater efficiencies to grow our shared prosperity. We believe in creating a collaborative, inclusive, and sustainable community to explore innovative solutions. Solutions that will contribute to achieving bioregional and global prosperity by integrating our three interconnected worlds: the natural world, the human-made physical world, and emerging technologies.
@BetterWorlds seeks to explore alternative viewpoints through media, international conferences, symposia, essays and hack-a-thons that encourage and support the development of innovative solutions.
