This week’s reflection begins with the Gospel appointed for July 6, 2025 — Luke 10:1–12, 17–20 — in which Jesus sends out seventy of his followers with nothing but peace, healing, and good news. No bag. No sandals. No doctrinal test. Just this charge:
Eat. Heal. Include. Proclaim.
From this radical hospitality, we turn to a quiet moment of exclusion — when Stephen’s mother, a converted Catholic, was denied the chalice during Communion because the consecrated wine had run out.
What happens when love is rationed? What does the Last Supper teach us about abundance, betrayal, and the sacredness of invitation?
Speaking as an unbaptized human walking in the way of Christ, Stephen reflects on this moment with scriptural grounding, canonical awareness, and deep pastoral grief. Drawing from Catholic Canon Law, the Gospels, and his own formation at Revelle College (UC San Diego), he invites us to imagine a church where no one is turned away — not because the rubrics require it, but because Love would. Because Christ would.
“If the cup runs dry, fill it again. If the bread runs out, consecrate more. Not because the rubrics require it —but because Love would.”
Scripture Readings:• Luke 10:1–12, 17–20 – Gospel reading for July 7, 2025• Luke 22:20 – “This cup that is poured out for you…”
About This Podcast:Between Bread and Stone is a weekly reflection from Stephen Brewer — an unbaptized human trying his best to live in the way of the early Christians. These reflections come from alleys, pews, feast days, and heartbreak. With scripture, study, and soul, each episode bears witness to the quiet places where the Church is most needed… and often missing.
This is not theology from a pulpit. It’s witness from the margins.
