Located in the northeastern part of Italy, Veneto is a winemaking region that is

part of the “Tre Venezie” (which also includes Friuli-Venezia Giulia and Trentino-

Alto Adige). The foothills of the Alps form the northern border of Veneto. In

general, there are two vastly different types of winemaking influences in Veneto –

the Alpine and Germanic influence (from the north) and the Roman influence

(from the south).

Umbria, located in central Italy, is a wine region that is primarily known for its

crispy, dry white wines made from Grechetto and the deep-colored, antioxidant-

rich red wines made from Sagrantino. It is the only Italian wine region without a

coastline or an international border.

Tuscany is a famous wine region located in central Italy. It is known primarily for

its red wines based on the Sangiovese grape, such as Chianti, Brunello di

Montalcino and Montepulciano. Ever since the 1970s, the region has also

produced the “Super Tuscans” – wines based on international grape varietals

such as Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot.

Sicily, located off the southernmost tip of Italy, is the largest island in the

Mediterranean, extending nearly 175 miles from east to west. As a winemaking

region, Sicily’s history dates back nearly 2500 years, to the very beginning of

Mediterranean viticulture.

Located 150 miles off the west coast of Italy, Sardinia (also known as Sardegna)

is one of Italy’s most diverse and eclectic winemaking regions. Given its location

in the Mediterranean, Sardinia has absorbed winemaking influences – both in

terms of winemaking techniques and the types of grapes grown – as much from

France and Spain as Italy.

Puglia (also known as Apulia) is a long, thin region located in the far

southeastern corner of Italy. Due to its location, it comprises the heel in the “boot

of Italy.” Puglia is perhaps as well known for its olive oil as its wines. Due to its

warm, fertile growing conditions, both olives and grapes thrive in Puglia.

Piedmont, located in Italy’s famed Po River Valley that is home to Milan and

Turin, is generally considered to be one of the country’s most famous wine

regions. The two most famous red wines from Piedmont – Barolo and

Barbaresco – account for only 3% of the wine region’s total production.

Lombardy, located in north central Italy, is a wine region that is primarily known

for its sparkling wines from Franciacorta and Oltrepo-Pavese. In addition, the

region produces red wines from Nebbiolo grapes in the Valtellina region and rosé

wines in areas around Lake Garda.
