As criminologists, Meghan and Amy teach, research, write and podcast about victims, offenders and the issues surrounding our criminal justice system-and each have over 20 years of experience working in the system in various capacities such as law enforcement, mental health and offender reentry.

Episode 25 Georgi Markov

Join Eileen from the CrimeLapse podcast as she discusses a case that is beyond bizarre – the death or Bulgarian playwright Georgi Markov. Markov, a Bulgarian dissident who had defected to England, was living in London and working for the BBC Bulgarian service. He also freelanced for Radio Free Europe, a western-centric broadcast news company that was critical of the government in his native Bulgaria. In September 1978 he was taken to a London hospital, where he died of blood poisoning. Before he died, Markov made sure doctors noted a small puncture mark on his thigh, which he said resulted when he was stabbed with the tip of an umbrella by a man he did not know. He came down with a fever within hours of the contact with the umbrella. And sure enough, a post-mortem revealed a metal pellet in his leg, believed to have been shot by a sophisticated gun. The tiny projectile was believed to contain ricin, and the attack on Markov was labeled a homicide. Who killed Georgi Markov?

Episode 24 The Woman At The Bar

After living with the body for a week while she prepared to make her escape, she absconded to Florida, where she abandoned Dave’s Escalade and checked into a hotel on the beach. There, while making friends at the bar and beach, she carefully selected a look-alike to murder so she could assume her identity. After befriending her, Lois shot Pam Hutchinson in a hotel room and stole her car and credit cards so she could support her life on the lam – and her gambling habit. If it weren’t for a chance encounter with someone from back home who recognized her, Lois might still be on the run today. This case is a bizarre and crazy case of murder, greed and intrigue!

Episode 23 The Richardson Family Murders

In 2006, Marc and Debra Richardson and their 8 year old son were found murdered in their home. Their 12 year old daughter was missing. But she was not abducted – she and her 23 year old boyfriend had killed her family and run off together. Jasmine and her boyfriend Jerry Steinke shared a passion for vampires, and both were members of a vampire fan website. They got the idea of murdering Jasmine’s family after watching the movie Natural Born Killers. Jasmine and Jerry were convicted of murdering her family, with Jasmine being the youngest person in Canadian history sent to prison on multiple counts of first-degree murder.

Episode 22 Matthew Hoffman


Join Bernadette from the Murderific podcast as she covers a case that is beyond bizarre: the case of triple murderer Matthew Hoffman. In 2010, Hoffman killed three members of one family, dismembered them, and placed their body parts into hollow trees. It was just a hint of the obsession the unemployed tree trimmer had with trees, leaves and branches. He kept the fourth family member, a 13 year old girl, hostage in his home, on a bed of leaves. When police entered the home, they found the house filled with more than 100 bags of leaves, piles of leaves throughout the house, and dead squirrels in the freezer. His confession would provide chilling details of Matthew Hoffman’s twisted mind.

What happened to Emanuela Orlandi?
