This time on The Beyond Borders Podcast, we go behind the story of Sweden's Child Killers: Victims or Criminals? - the documentary that asks how Sweden's gangs turned children into contract killers, and whether anyone can stop them.
This is what it was actually like on the ground. From a murder scene we arrived at less than 24 hours after a teenager was shot dead outside his home, to a police weapons cache holding 27,000 seized items including grenades, assault rifles, and 3D printed handguns.
Among those we meet are three alleged gang members who agreed to only talk to us in a cold basement. All three had a casualness about violence and criminal behaviour that was difficult to reconcile with how young they were.
We also go inside a community centre that makes a simple argument: £200,000 a year to keep kids off the street, or £700,000 a year to keep one person behind bars. The maths isn't complicated.
And we ask why it's the children of immigrants, not the first generation, who are most at risk of being recruited.
Sweden calls it a national emergency. The age of criminal responsibility has just been lowered to 13. But few think that’s the answer.
The story behind the story.
