The Universelles Leben (UL), a new religious movement founded by Gabriele Wittek, is facing an uncertain future following her death in October 2024. Wittek, considered a prophetess by her followers, led the group for nearly 50 years, disseminating her teachings through a vast network of companies, publications, and media channels. This network, which includes organic food businesses, publishing houses, radio and TV stations, has generated considerable wealth for the UL, raising questions about its financial transparency. Critics and former members have accused the group of employing cult-like tactics, such as exploiting members financially and psychologically, and using aggressive legal actions to silence dissent.
Despite the controversy, the UL has maintained a low profile in recent years, particularly after the departure of its long-time spokesperson in 2012. The death of Wittek, who had not made public appearances for many years, further adds to the uncertainty surrounding the movement's future. The group's teachings, which combine elements of Christianity with reincarnation and apocalyptic prophecies, remain a source of contention. Whether the UL can maintain its economic and ideological influence without its charismatic leader remains to be seen.
