In the shadow of the Bleeding Kansas, stories of the conflict fueled a new athletics rivalry. In the early years, the Tigers and Jayhawks played often, largely due to the geographic constraints of travel at the time. This proximity, along with the violent history between the citizens of each of the states, were instrumental in developing a rivalry that lasts to this day. The shifting dynamics at the beginning of the athletic rivalry set up the tension that exploded in the mid-1900s.
