Have you ever felt like you're doing everything right but something still feels wrong? That's exactly where I found myself recently. I was prioritising rest, setting boundaries and practicing all the self-care principles I teach, yet my body was still shutting down.

This episode takes you on my unexpected journey from severe exhaustion to emergency hospitalisation after discovering critically low iron levels and internal bleeding requiring surgery. I'm sharing this vulnerable story not for sympathy, but because it highlights a crucial truth: sometimes our bodies need more than just rest, they need medical intervention. When persistent exhaustion, dizziness or other symptoms linger despite your best efforts at self-care, professional medical assessment becomes essential.

My health crisis also exposed how our family system had become unsustainably dependent on me. Coming home from hospital to household chaos wasn't about my husband's efforts (he was doing his best) but about the realization that I'd been carrying too much for too long. This experience has become a catalyst for teaching my children greater awareness beyond themselves and building their capacity to contribute meaningfully to our family. By carrying everything ourselves, we often unknowingly prevent our children from developing crucial life skills and awareness.

Whether you're feeling overwhelmed with family responsibilities or ignoring your body's signals that something isn't right, this episode offers permission to stop carrying it all. Remember that true self-care sometimes means asking for help, delegating responsibilities to your children (even young ones) and trusting medical professionals when your intuition says something isn't right.

Trauma and disorganisation often walk hand-in-hand, though we rarely connect these dots in our healing journeys. In this deeply personal episode, I share my experience of childhood sexual abuse and how an unexpected tool (organising my physical space and finances) became instrumental in my recovery process.

From ages 8-10, I endured regular abuse that left me emotionally numb for years. At 18, standing before the courtroom, I made the pivotal choice to forgive my abuser, not for his sake, but for my freedom. This choice opened the door to healing, but the journey was far from linear. Even after marrying the love of my life at 24, unprocessed trauma resurfaced, proving that our past requires attention even when our present seems perfect.

The turning point came through organising. Starting with our finances and then moving to organising our small two-bedroom unit, I discovered that creating order in my external environment helped establish an internal sense of control that trauma had stolen. That first bathroom cupboard I decluttered represented more than just tidiness, it was reclaiming agency over my life. As I continued organising spaces and tracking spending, both my home and mind became calmer. The changes were gradual but transformative.

If you're struggling with chaos and overwhelm while also carrying past hurts, I want you to know these challenges may be connected. Start small, perhaps with a non-sentimental space like I did and pair your organising efforts with professional support for emotional healing. Ever wondered if organised people were just born that way? My journey proves otherwise. Twelve years ago, I was drowning in debt with zero money management skills and a home full of clutter. Today, I manage investments, run a business and maintain a functional home while raising four children. The transformation wasn't overnight, nor was it straightforward.

My organising odyssey began with finances after my husband graciously cleared my pre-marriage debt. Rather than learning my lesson, I continued struggling with budgeting and spending, creating uncomfortable conversations and feelings of inequality in our marriage. The breakthrough came when instead of judgment, my husband offered partnership, acknowledging we needed to tackle our financial chaos together. This collaborative approach became the foundation for all future organising efforts.

What surprised me most was how organising one area created ripple effects throughout my life. As I decluttered our bathroom (chosen strategically for its lack of sentimental items), I discovered I'd been spending money to "solve" problems actually caused by excess stuff. With less physical clutter, my financial decisions improved, eventually leading us out of debt completely. When motherhood arrived, time management naturally followed as I adapted to the reality that "just running to the shops" now involved multiple steps with a baby.

The most valuable lesson came from going too far: becoming so organised that perfection became the enemy of peace. I'd snap at family members for "messing up" what I'd just cleaned, not recognising how my excessive standards were stealing our joy. This led to developing what I call the "4D Filter": Delete (remove what's unnecessary), Delegate (assign tasks to others), Delay (postpone non-urgent tasks), and Do Differently (create simpler systems).

Finding your personal organisational sweet spot (where you function well without sacrificing happiness) is the true goal. Whether you're just beginning to tackle clutter or you've gone too far into perfectionism, there's a middle ground where organisation serves your life rather than consuming it. The path to change began with simply catching myself, then gradually introducing positive affirmations until my mindset genuinely transformed.
