In every movement there is a branch that takes basic tenants and teachings and draws a hard line in the sand. If you cross that line your out the door. On the other side? Sometimes it feels like anything goes. In the world of Christianity we call this “Fundamentalism.” It can seem weird. It can be difficult. And for those on the inside it can be downright dangerous. You know that feeling when something challenges your deepest held beliefs? Or maybe that feeling when you’re trying to decide between two flavors of ice cream? In both scenarios you are dealing with an experience called cognitive dissonance. Our brains are processing through situations like these almost constantly and it can be exhausting, challenging, and even world shattering. But refusing to engage in this process is equally dangerous for our engagement with the world.

Welcome to August and the next installment in Beyond Sunday’s ongoing Books of the Bible Series. We’re taking a break from the narrative plot and getting some instruction from the book of Leviticus. The Israelites are living as free people and traveling through the wilderness to the land God promised to Abraham. But in Leviticus we step out of that motion to get some instructions from God on how these people are called to live now that they are freed to be God’s chosen people. You may have skipped over Leviticus in the past but we think you’ll want to take another look after this week’s conversation.

With the Corona Virus still surging across the United States families across the country are looking to the school year and wondering what is coming next. Beyond Sunday doesn’t have the right answer to what the school year should look like. But as people of faith, we want to strive for a healthier level of discourse.
