I’m talking with San Diego native and the man behind The Bogey Blog, James Paige, about his favorite team ever, the 1994 San Diego Chargers! That team came seemingly out of nowhere to make the Super Bowl before facing off with the STACKED San Francisco 49ers in what ended up being one of the most lopsided Super Bowls ever, but it wasn’t all bad. In fact, they were super interesting! 

We talk about what James remembers from the years leading up to the 1994 team, including the hiring of former Citadel football coach Bobby Ross! How long until James was infected with the standard San Diegan sports fan sense of impending doom?

We also go through and remember some guys! How much knowledge did I retain from years of playing Madden and watching the Carolina Panthers lose as a child (some things never change)? Who is Mark Seay and why does he have the most incredible story you’ve never heard of? James also tells some stories of seeing the Chargers out and about in San Diego!

James talks about the 1994 NFL playoffs, including how low his expectations were and why he watched the games by himself. He talks about the joy of watching that team make the Super Bowl and how quickly it all went away when he realized who they were playing. 

What was it like watching his favorite team go up against a team loaded with future Hall of Famers? And how long before all hope was lost? We go through the agony of being on the losing end of one of the biggest blowouts in Super Bowl history. 

Finally, I aim to depress you by talking about the many different ways players from that 1994 team have died, why you will never love sports the way you did as a child, and the harsh realities of sports fandom. James talks about how the franchises move to LA affected him and how ownership missteps drove his own grandfather away from the Chargers years earlier!

As I launch a new series where I talk to people about their favorite teams ever, I start with my own, the mid-’90s Houston Rockets! Houston native and diehard sports fan KP joins me as we go through everything that led up to those Rockets’ teams capturing back-to-back NBA titles! 

We start in the ‘70s and ‘80s when a young KP first became a Rockets fan himself! KP talks about the difficulty of even watching the NBA on TV, the underappreciated greatness of Moses Malone, and the drafting of Ralph Sampson. Which current NBA player reminds KP of Ralph?

We move on to the Rockets winning a coinflip to draft Hakeem and forming possibly the greatest big man 1-2 punch in the history of the game only to see a potential dynasty derailed by injuries and cocaine! How did a team that upset the Showtime Lakers to face the Celtics in the NBA Finals find itself floundering in NBA purgatory for YEARS?

Then, a familiar face returns as the Rockets build out a roster fit for a contender! How did a new system and young players help Hakeem cement himself as the best player in the league? Also, the road from Choke City to Clutch City and a rematch of the 1984 NCAA Finals with a special guest appearance from OJ Simpson. 

Getting on top is hard, but staying there is even harder. We talk about the challenges facing Houston as they tried to repeat as NBA champions and how those struggles led to trading for Houston’s own Clyde Drexler. Also, a Dream Finals run that featured a Kiss of Death, an MVP showdown with David Robinson, and a young, svelte Shaq!

College football has been hit by scandal after scandal recently, so I had to pull in my college football experts to help me break it all down! P.D. of the Gamecocks Football Captain’s Log and Brett of Brett’s Bets join me to talk about everything going on in the world of college football AND we get a special guest appearance from The Expert to pick some of this weekend’s games! 

First, Clemson coach Dabo Swinney had a showdown with Tyler from Spartanburg about the Tigers' awful season. Who was right? Who was wrong? And why did Tyler’s call remind me of one of rap’s most famous diss tracks? We also talk about why Clemson’s program has been on a downward trend and if we expect to see Dabo coaching somewhere else soon! 

Next up, Michigan is in hot water over a sign-stealing scandal. How big of a deal is it really though? And when does cheating cross the line? Also, we talk about whether we think Jim Harbaugh knew about it, if the College Football Playoff Committee should factor it into their rankings, and Connor Stalions’ chances of becoming a head coach. 

Then, Deion Sanders has far exceeded expectations in his first year as Colorado’s head coach, but his offensive linemen haven’t and he decided to let them know about it. Is this different from how college football coaches typically handle poor play? Will it inspire his players to do better? And we discuss how the criticism Coach Prime has received so far sometimes misses the mark. 

Finally, Iowa has one of the worst offenses we’ve seen. As a result, they announced offensive coordinator Brian Ferentz won’t return next season. Will this make Thanksgiving Dinner awkward since his dad, Kirk, is the head coach? Will Kirk leave too? How quickly would Brett fire his own son? And we laugh at some ridiculous stats from the Hawkeyes’ season so far. 

As a bonus, we also give Brett the chance to rant about South Carolina football for a bit!

Gymnastics is a sport that most of us pay attention to every 4 years when the Olympics are on, but what do the actual athletes have to go through just to get a chance for that moment? Taylor King sits down with me to talk about her experience as an elite gymnast growing up in Kentucky! 

We talk about how she got started, the commitment involved, and the importance of having supportive parents in your corner! Taylor also details her experiences with coaches, some good and some bad, and how they shaped her approach to helping other gymnasts as she transitioned into coaching herself! 

She also breaks down what makes Simone Biles so great and why she made the right decision to step aside in the 2021 Olympics for her mental and physical health. Also, we discuss the impact the 1996 Olympic US women’s gymnastics team had on us!

The 2023-24 NBA season is upon us, but how can we possibly know what’s going to happen? Real hoopers know there’s one surefire way to tell the contenders from the pretenders, and that’s the eye test! So tap in as I break down each team and tell you what I love about them, what I hate about them, and if they’ll be seeing the Larry O’Brien trophy this year! 

Let’s talk about the Southeast Division! The Atlanta Hawks will play their first full season under head coach Quin Snyder. Can he work his magic with Trae Young and Dejounte Murray and get them to the playoffs? Or should they move one of them and start over?

The Charlotte Hornets have been an absolute mess both on and off the court recently. Can they get it together at all? And is Lamelo Ball the right guy to build this franchise around? 

Jimmy Butler always seems to make sure the Miami Heat overachieve my season preview predictions. Can he possibly pull it off again? Or will their inability to land a superstar come back to haunt them?
