Beyond the Building

This week we looked at Nehemiah 4 and how we can face external and internal opposition by "remembering the Lord who is great and awesome" and fighting for what matters most. We were reminded that Nehemiah was a man of prayer but also a man of action. He prayed like it depended on God and acted as if it depended on himself. When we do those two things and keep them in the right order, God + 1 is always enough.

This week we began a series look at the book and life of Nehemiah. We focused on Nehemiah 1 and saw that when Nehemiah heard of the condition GOd's people and His land, his heart broke and he humbly went to the Father and declared God's righteousness, the unrighteousness of the people and then asked for a path to do something about it. For nearly four months Nehemiah humbly cried out to the Lord. Revival starts with one person humbling themselves before God, confessing their sins and the sins of the people trusting that it is only God who is able to redeem, restore and revive a broken situation.

Concentrating on the Word of God through prayer and allowing His word to transform us. It is not a fast, quick fix conversation, but rather a slow, quiet conversation. This week we spent time looking at Paul's words from Ephesians 1. As we dove into these verses we were remained that even before the galaxies were created the Creator loved, chose, adopted, redeemed and forgave you. He did all of this through His Son, Jesus Christ. We saw that when we are in Christ, we have an identity that is unchanging and the proof, or guarentee of that identity is the "seal" that God gives us in His Holy Spirit. Our challenge was to spend more time reading and knowing our true identity and less time listening to all the noise in the world that tries to give you an unstable identity to build your life on. This week we were challenged by the words of David in Psalm 63:8, the words of Jesus from Mark 8 and the actions of the early Church in Acts 2 to consider what it is that we are truly following hard after. We saw how David even in the wilderness, running for his life from the enemy wanted nothing more than to follow hard after God. Then we saw how Jesus didn't hide the costs of truly following Him when He explained that to follow Him meant to deny ourselves and take up our cross daily. This wasn't a call to comfort but it was a call to dying to our selfish ambitions and desires and to live for His will and His purpose each day. We then saw this played out through the early church as the devoted themselves to the apostles teaching, breaking of bread together, prayer and serving others. As we begin to truly follow hard after Jesus with a costly commitment, the Lord can and will add to the number daily those being saved. This should be our ultimate goal of being a Christ follower, not just to make a one time decision for ourselves, but to make a daily decision so that the world around us can see Jesus through us and come to a saving relationship with Him as well.
