Cold plunges. Sauna. Peptides. Testosterone. Dr. Gershon rates today's biggest longevity trends as overrated, underrated, or it depends, and some of his answers might surprise you.
In this episode of Beyond The Fountain of Youth, Dr. Julian R. Gershon, Jr. runs through a rapid-fire round of today's most talked-about longevity trends, rating creatine, red light therapy, peptide therapy, testosterone replacement, continuous glucose monitoring, EBO2 blood ozone therapy, and therapeutic plasma exchange as overrated, underrated, or it depends. He explains what actually separates a genuinely underrated therapy from marketing hype, and where each one fits into a real longevity plan.
"Creatine is definitely underrated," Dr. Gershon says, pointing to its role in muscle metabolism and recovery time, a benefit significant enough that his practice recently added a creatine gummy to its product line. Red light therapy earns the same rating, though he is candid about the catch: "There's a lot of junk on the market." Dr. Gershon warns that many red colored LED lights sold online do nothing at all, and recommends sourcing equipment with multiple wavelengths from a reputable manufacturer rather than buying based on price alone.
Peptide therapy gets a more nuanced answer. "They're not overrated," Dr. Gershon explains, but he cautions that most people asking for peptides cannot say which one they actually need or why. He shares that he personally takes epitalon, a peptide shown to help prevent telomere shortening, the tips of your DNA that determine how fast you age. "I'm seventy-three," he says. "My biologic glycan age is thirty-five." Testosterone, by contrast, lands squarely in "it depends." Dr. Gershon sees dozens of men in their twenties and thirties with suboptimal testosterone levels, but says he almost never prescribes testosterone itself without first trying to stimulate natural production, since starting testosterone therapy means the body stops making its own.
Dr. Gershon also weighs in on continuous glucose monitoring, explaining that while it is valuable for diabetics, chasing every fluctuation is not necessary for most people following a high protein diet. He rates EBO2, a blood filtration and ozone therapy, as new but says "it's definitely not overrated," describing a treatment that filters five to seven liters of blood to remove heavy metals, toxins, and viral particles before supercharging it with ozone. He calls therapeutic plasma exchange "in the category of underrated or not rated yet because it's so brand new." His practice is now the only facility in Colorado offering it. "Before I was even finished," he says of his own treatment, "I was just like unplug me, man. I'm ready to go."
