Mary Jane “Bricktop” Jackson roamed the mid-1800s red light area of New Orleans known as Gallatin Street was a notorious figure among the thieves and murderers that lived there. “Bricktop,” (so named for her sturdy build and bright red hair) and the stories of her infamous fights with and murders of men and women alike, have made her one of the most colorful characters from the city’s long history.
