Kids walk into schools, homes, practices, and communities carrying the rest of their lives with them, just like adults do. In the first episode of Beyond the Hallway, Pete Klugh explores why recognizing what we have in common with young people is an important starting point for connecting with them. Meeting kids where they are does not mean lowering expectations or excusing behavior. It means understanding where they are starting so we have a better chance of helping them move forward.
This episode looks at what educators have learned about the role relationships, emotions, experiences, and circumstances play in reaching kids, and how those lessons can translate beyond school into the ways families and communities engage the young people in their lives.
