We surveyed more than 130 students in our student ministry about their spiritual growth, Bible reading, Scripture memorization, prayer, church attendance, discipleship, evangelism, and Gospel sharing—and the results challenged how we think about youth ministry. In this episode of Beyond the Youth Room, we share five lessons from our student faith survey that every youth pastor and student ministry leader should consider. We talk about measuring spiritual growth in youth ministry, building an effective student discipleship strategy, training teenagers in spiritual disciplines, developing student leaders, creating a culture of evangelism, and helping students become disciples who make disciples. The survey didn’t just show us where our students were spiritually—it exposed areas of our youth ministry strategy that needed to change. We discuss why you are what you measure, the difference between teaching students and training them, why our Sunday morning strategy is working, what evangelism data taught us about investing in students who are ready to go, and why we realized we weren’t calling our students to enough. If you’re a youth pastor, student pastor, youth ministry leader, or volunteer who wants to develop spiritually mature students and build a stronger discipleship culture, this episode will give you practical questions to ask about your own ministry.00:00 We Surveyed Our Students About Their Faith00:33 What Is an A.L.I.V.E. In this episode of Beyond the Youth Room, church planter and former youth pastor Brandon Hembree joins us to talk about youth ministry, church planting, discipleship, evangelism, student ministry, leadership development, and building a healthy youth ministry without relying on programs, buildings, or big budgets.Brandon spent 10 years in youth ministry before becoming a church planter, giving him a unique perspective on how much the two worlds have in common. He explains why church planting doesn’t begin with a worship service—it begins with sharing the Gospel, making disciples, developing leaders, and multiplying those disciples. That same mindset can reshape the way we think about student ministry. Instead of starting with events, programs, or everything a “normal” youth ministry is supposed to have, what if we started by asking how we can make disciples of teenagers? We also talk about the challenges of doing youth ministry in a church plant, including limited space, smaller budgets, fewer resources, and the pressure to recreate the programs of larger churches. Brandon explains why those challenges don’t have to be limitations—and how starting small can actually force you to focus on what matters most. Finally, we talk about why youth pastors can make great church planters, how to know if God may be calling you toward church planting, and what youth ministry leaders can begin doing now to prepare for whatever God calls them to next.If you’re a youth pastor, student pastor, church planter, next-gen leader, or youth ministry volunteer, this conversation will challenge you to think beyond programs and build your ministry around the Great Commission, Gospel evangelism, disciple-making, multiplication, and developing leaders.CHAPTERS0:00 Starting a Youth Ministry From Scratch3:02 Meet Brandon Hembree8:22 Why Church Planting?15:00 What Youth Ministry Can Learn From Church Planting18:05 Building Youth Ministry From Scratch28:15 Should Youth Pastors Consider Church Planting?35:36 Prioritizing Youth Ministry in a Church Plant41:19 Encouragement When Your Ministry Is Small

In this episode of Beyond the Youth Room, Shane Pruitt and Dr. Shelly Melia, authors of Reaching Generation Alpha, join us to talk about Gen Alpha, youth ministry, student discipleship, evangelism, technology, social media, and what it looks like to reach the next generation with the Gospel.Gen Alpha is growing up in a world where algorithms, social media, AI, and technology are shaping how they think about truth, relationships, identity, and even God. Shane and Shelly explain why this makes Generation Alpha distinct from Gen Z and what youth pastors and student ministry leaders need to understand about the students they’re discipling. We also talk about why every student is already being discipled by something, the need for “less monologue and more dialogue” in youth ministry, and how leaders can help students develop a biblical worldview rather than simply absorbing what they see online. The conversation also gets practical about partnering with parents, creating space for students to ask hard questions, teaching theology, encouraging evangelism, and helping teenagers actually live out their faith. If you’re a youth pastor, student pastor, next-gen leader, children’s ministry leader, or parent, this episode will help you better understand Gen Alpha and think intentionally about discipleship in a rapidly changing culture.CHAPTERS 0:00 Gen Alpha Isn’t Gen Z4:42 Who Is Generation Alpha?6:26 What Makes Gen Alpha Different?12:42 How Technology Is Shaping Gen Alpha23:18 Less Monologue, More Dialogue29:35 Gen Alpha & Screen Time32:40 Equipping Parents to Disciple Gen Alpha38:52 What About Generation Beta?42:25 Are We Seeing a Spiritual Awakening?44:21 What Gen Alpha Needs From the Church

In this practical youth ministry discipleship deep dive, we walk through a simple discipleship pathway for students, how to create a clear student discipleship strategy, and how youth pastors can intentionally move students from new believers toward mature disciples who make disciples. If you lead a student ministry, youth group, small group ministry, or church youth ministry, this episode will help you build a practical discipleship system, improve new believer follow-up, define what spiritual growth should look like, and use your weekly youth ministry programs as a training ground for discipleship. We’ll walk through four simple questions that shape the entire plan: What do we have in place for a new believer? What kind of disciple do we want to make? How can we leverage our programs to train students toward that goal? And how can we keep the process simple enough to actually use? You’ll also hear how we approach new believer resources, follow-up conversations, spiritual growth assessments, and intentional programming designed around who we want students to become—not just what we want them to know. The goal is not to build a complicated system. Many youth pastors and student ministry leaders want to make disciples, but common youth ministry discipleship myths can keep us focused on programs, attendance, Bible knowledge, and spiritual activity instead of actually helping students become mature followers of Jesus. In this episode of the Beyond the Youth Room Podcast, we break down five of the biggest discipleship myths in youth ministry and the truths youth pastors need to hear instead. We discuss why youth ministry programs aren't where discipleship ultimately happens, why students don't need to reach a certain level of spiritual maturity before sharing their faith, why more Bible knowledge doesn't automatically produce mature disciples, and why attendance alone is a poor measure of spiritual growth. We also explain why discipleship must happen intentionally and how defining the kind of disciple you're trying to develop can completely change your youth ministry strategy. If you're a youth pastor, student pastor, youth ministry leader, or volunteer looking for practical ways to improve student discipleship, develop spiritually mature teenagers, measure spiritual growth, encourage evangelism, and build a healthier youth ministry, this episode is for you.Subscribe for weekly conversations about youth ministry, student ministry, youth discipleship, youth ministry leadership, evangelism, youth group growth, Gen Z, Gen Alpha, and reaching teenagers with the Gospel.CHAPTERS0:00 Introduction6:03 Myth #1: Programs = Discipleship12:04 Myth #2: Discipleship Before Evangelism15:01 Myth #3: More Knowledge = More Maturity18:53 Myth #4: Attendance = Spiritual Growth26:01 Myth #5: Discipleship Happens Naturally27:15 Defining an A.L.I.V.E. ⚡Take the Evangelism Challenge 👉 https://www.generationunashamed.org/kits🔥 Join Our Community: https://www.skool.com/beyondtheyouthroom/aboutHow do you build evangelism into your youth ministry programs? In this video, I share three practical strategies youth pastors can use to make sure students hear the Gospel every time they come to youth group. We cover first-time visitor follow-up, reaching new students, Gospel conversations, student evangelism, youth group announcements, Gospel-centered preaching, invitations to respond to Christ, and creating an outreach culture in your student ministry.A few years ago, we realized we were having hundreds of first-time guests come through our doors, but we couldn’t confidently say that every one of them had heard the Gospel. We decided we couldn’t leave that to chance. We needed to intentionally build opportunities to hear and respond to Jesus into our programming. In this video, I walk through the three changes we made:1. Our first-time guest process: Every new student receives a welcome gift that creates a natural opportunity for their friend or a leader to walk them through the Gospel.2. Our announcement time: We reinforce the Gospel every time we meet using Life in 6 Words, helping students memorize and understand how to clearly explain their faith.3. Our weekly teaching: Whatever Scripture or topic we’re teaching, we intentionally connect it back to the Gospel and give students an opportunity to respond to Christ. The result is that a first-time guest can hear the Gospel three different times, from different people, during their very first visit. If you’re a youth pastor, student pastor, youth leader, or church leader looking for practical ideas for youth group outreach, evangelism training, reaching unchurched teenagers, first-time guest follow-up, student discipleship, or sharing the Gospel with teenagers, I hope this gives you a system you can adapt for your ministry.#YouthMinistry #YouthPastor #StudentMinistry #Evangelism #YouthGroupCHAPTERS0:00 - How We Build the Gospel Into Our Programs0:53 - #1: First-Time Visitor Process3:34 - #2: Gospel During Announcements5:15 - #3: Gospel in Every Message

We talk about why relational evangelism has to become more than an occasional sermon series, why consistency matters more than motivation, and how setting clear expectations can help students begin living on mission. You’ll hear how we went from 355 Gospel conversations in one year to more than 4,400, why we track Gospel conversations, and the practical systems we use to keep evangelism in front of our students all year long.We also unpack an important realization: 7,000 Gospel conversations sounds huge, but it’s only the beginning. When students understand that sharing their faith is a normal part of following Jesus, the potential impact of a youth ministry extends far beyond what happens inside the youth room.If you’re a youth pastor or youth ministry leader who wants to develop students who don’t just know the Gospel but actively share it, this episode will give you practical ideas you can start using in your ministry.Subscribe to Beyond the Youth Room for practical conversations about youth ministry growth, evangelism, discipleship, leadership, and reaching the next generation.0:00 7,000 Gospel Conversations5:00 What Counts?14:58 7,000 Isn’t Enough17:54 Consistency Matters22:23 Who Shares the Most?29:56 What Holds Students Back?33:26 Building a Culture of Evangelism37:04 Final Thoughts
