A new report by the Melbourne Energy Institute authored by Dimitri Lafleur, Tim Forcey, Hugh Saddler and Mike Sandiford has found that unmeasured methane leakage and fugitive emissions from unconventional gasfields could cause Australia to fail its Paris climate commitments.
The report found, methane measurements at US unconventional gas fields have found leakage rates in the order of 10-25 times higher than the Australian government reports to the UNFCCC, and up to 170 times those claimed by the gas industry.
Following his presentation, Dimitri will join a panel discussion with Tim Forceyand Richard Keech to answer your questions.
About the panelists:
Dimitri Lafleur worked as a geoscientist for Shell for 11 years in the Netherlands and Australia. He has recently returned to academic life in pursuit of a PhD researching the climate impact of fugitive emissions of the fossil fuel industry, and unconventional gas in particular.
Tim Forcey is Energy Advisor at the University of Melbourne Energy Institute, with 35 years of industrial experience in the electricity, oil, gas, and petrochemicals sectors. More about Tim
Richard Keech is an energy consultant, lead author of the BZE ZCA Buildings Plan and Energy Freedom book; and is a regular contributor to the ATA’s publications on topics related to energy efficiency.
