The introduction of self-government to Singapore in 1959 meant Singapore reached a democratic height that it has never reached again. And because of the open democratic system, politicians had to furiously compete with each other for votes. 1959 was perhaps Singapore’s most politically exciting year, seeing both the best and worst of democracy in the events surrounding the election. In this episode, PJ Thum describes the events of 1959, and explains why 1959 (a date whose significance is often lost to Singaporeans) is so significant. Shakespeare’s ‘Richard III’ is presented through the grotesque of Butoh in the shapes of two productions, ‘Laments of the Dead” and ‘’Car Park and Six Incidents of Murder.” Swee Keong says that Richard III presents himself first as a man of conscience, however, this voice of morality does not stop him from the mayhem he commits and the blood he spills to reach the throne and hold on to it. We find out if these productions defends evil merely by beautifying it.
In the first episode, we delved into the history and heritage of the city exploring its development and progression over these 40 years. To continue that conversation, we pick the minds of the community themselves with three loud & proud Subang-nites on the township's housing market, the sense of togetherness with the Subang 'pride', and the exciting future that would elevate Subang Jaya as a first-class city. And then, Sime Darby Property's future plans for development, a more vibrant community, and making Subang a well-connected city with Transit Oriented Development as we hear from Dato Jauhari Hamidi, the Managing Director of Sime Darby Property.
And then rounding off our series, we feature two individuals born-and-bred Subangnites representing and pushing the limits of the numerous sub-cultures in the incredibly diverse community of Subang - denim-head Hazri Chee, owner of Cheese Denim and rapper Joe Flizzow tell us of their stories in Subang and how there is no place like home.
