Bank Negara wants consumers to get a better deal out of insurance products. The liberalisation of insurance pricing, called 'detariffication' in industry speak, has taken a long time to materialise but will be implemented in the next few years. We find out how this will impact the general insurance industry.
Last week, Indonesia banned its vessels from sailing to The Philippines, after seven Indonesian sailors were kidnapped at gunpoint, and are now being held hostage by suspected Abu Sayyaf militants. This follows the kidnapping and release of four Malaysian sailors, the beheading of a Canadian hostage and a spate of violent incidents over the past year, involving the group based in the Southern Philippines.
Today we explore Abu Sayyaf’s kidnapping industry, the group’s growing allegiance to the Islamic State, and possible measures that authorities can take to curb its criminal activities.
This report is by Jason Lim.
We tend to think and speak of globalization as a natural process: an inevitable and given part of human evolution. Sanjay Krishnan joins us this week to provide a critical genealogy and take of that outlook. He locates the discourse in the emergence of empire and how that discourse was internalised and adopted in various ways in our context.
Kam's away but the show still goes on! The trio banter on Downton Abbey, the art of minimalism and Ostriches - or rather, one ostrich. You know which one.
This week, Patrick Teoh takes you on another foot stomping, hand clapping ride down memory lane as he blows dust off his vinyl collection to bring you the most popular songs of the year 1989 by Billboard Magazine. Featuring Paula Abdul, Will To Power, Cher, NKOTB and many more.

These days, news travels faster mostly on the internet, and less so through the conventional, print media. Recognising this, a lot of print media organisations are trying to make their presence felt on the World Wide Web. However, the shift is not as simple as it seems. While others are struggling to juggle between both, some found the right formula to make it work. This week, we speak to Taz, a media organisation from Germany that is learning the ropes of both mediums, and gaining the right traction.
