India is about to experiment with a completely different kind of cash.
The Government has approved the RBI’s proposal for field trials of 1 billion polymer ₹10 notes and 1 billion polymer ₹20 notes. That means 2 billion polymer banknotes could enter the trial phase as India explores a more durable alternative to traditional paper currency.
But what exactly are polymer banknotes? Why is India testing them? Are ₹10 and ₹20 paper notes going away? And could plastic currency eventually become a bigger part of everyday payments in India?
In this episode of Bharath Speaks, we break down the announcement in simple language and look at what this could mean for the future of Indian currency.
Important: These are currently field trials. Existing paper ₹10 and ₹20 notes are not being immediately withdrawn, and polymer notes are proposed to circulate alongside paper currency.
