आसीत् कृष्णावतारकाले पुण्डलीको नाम कश्चन मातापित्रोः भक्तः । कदाचित् श्रीकृष्णः तम् अनुग्रहीतुम् इच्छन् चन्द्रभागनदीतीरस्थं पुण्डलीकाश्रमं प्रति निर्गतः । पुण्डलीकस्य पितृसेवां दृष्ट्वा सन्तुष्टः भगवान् 'वरं वृणीष्व' इत्यवदत् । तदा पुण्डलीकेन सविनयम् उक्तः 'लोके पितृभक्तिमहत्त्वं प्रदर्शयितुं भवता अत्रैव देव्या सह स्थातव्यम्' इति । भक्तस्य इच्छां परिपालयता कृष्णेन तत्रैव स्थितम् । तदेव पण्ढरापुरम् इति ख्यातम् जातम् ।  
(“केन्द्रीयसंस्कृतविश्वविद्यालयस्य अष्टादशीयोजनान्तर्गततया एतासां कथानां ध्वनिप्रक्षेपणं क्रियते”)

During the time of Krishna’s incarnation, there lived a devotee named Pundalik, devoted to serving his parents. Once, Krishna wished to bless him and went to Pundalik’s hermitage on the bank of the Chandrabhaga river. Seeing Pundalik’s devoted service to his parents, the Lord was pleased and said, “Ask for a boon.” Humbly, Pundalik replied, “To show the world the greatness of devotion to parents, you must remain here with the Goddess.” Respecting the devotee’s wish, Krishna stayed there. That place became famous as Pandharpur.
