In this enlightening short audio talk, Nutan Swamiji explains that duhkha, as such, is not unenjoyable. Otherwise, how do we watch tragedy movies, read novels filled with pathos, and shed tears? We are actually enjoying the sorrow there. However, when it comes to our own lives, we fail to retain that impersonality and thus suffer. If we stop hating duhkha, we find that it can bring a lot of enrichment.
Whenever duhkha arises, why should we refuse to experience it? Swamiji says it is this refusal to suffer that makes us hate and fear it. Instead, we should invite the duhkha and allow ourselves to experience it; then we find that the tendency to avoid it diminishes, and we begin to enjoy duhkha. This is the secret to maintaining evenness of mind in sukha and duhkha.
