The Ark of the Covenant was built at Sinai under Moses and placed inside the Tabernacle’s Holy of Holies. During Israel’s wilderness journey, the Ark traveled with the people, sometimes leading them when they marched and always remaining at the center of the camp.

When Israel crossed the Jordan into the Promised Land, the priests carried the Ark into the river, and the waters stopped until the nation had passed over. The Ark was then carried around Jericho during the conquest, and afterward it came to rest at Shiloh, where it remained for generations.

The Philistines moved it from city to city, but each place was struck with plagues, so they sent it back to Israel on a cart.
