Sermon on Hebrews 12:18-29

This message from Hebrews 12:12–17 challenges us to keep running faithfully as we pursue the finish line of our faith. We are called to run together, encouraging and strengthening one another along the way; to press on with endurance even when the race becomes difficult; and to clear out the sins, distractions, and obstacles that keep us from running well. Along the way, we are commanded to strive for peace and holiness, remembering that holiness is not about earning God's love but living out the new life we have already received through Christ. Finally, we are warned not to allow bitterness to take root in our hearts, but instead to obtain the grace of God that enables us to forgive, pursue peace, and continue faithfully toward the finish line.

This message from Hebrews 12:3–13 helps us understand the Lord’s discipline by looking at three ways God perfectly cares for and shapes His children. He is the perfect Trainer, ordering our hardships and personally preparing us for the work He has called us to do. He is the perfect Father, allowing difficulty with a loving purpose because He knows what is truly best for us even when we cannot see or understand it. And He is the wise Physician, sovereignly using hardship to bring healing and spiritual growth while ultimately securing our eternal healing through Jesus Christ. Through the examples of Joshua, Rahab, Gideon, Daniel, and many others, we see that faith is not measured by earthly success but by steadfast obedience to God's will. Sometimes God displays His glory through miraculous victories, and other times through believers who faithfully endure suffering with their hope fixed on eternity. Because of the finished work of Jesus Christ and the promise of a greater resurrection, we can pray boldly, trust God's perfect plan, and walk by faith with confidence, knowing that our greatest hope is not found in this world but in the one to come.
