Series: "FAQ Believers Want to Know"
Episode 2-Decoding Devotion
More often that I can recall, I've been asked the question of "how do I personally do devotion" or "practically, how does my devotion time with God look"? When thinking about the term "devotion" I'm sure many facets may come to mind. A person can devote their bodies to a particular practice, we can devote our resources for a particular purpose, our families can be devoted to specific values or norms, etc...But today, we're going to deal with devotion from the aspect of "disciplined and intentional time set apart for God and God only."
So on today's show, we're going to discuss "5 traits " of what devotion IS and what it is NOT.
- REAL DEVOTION IS NOT ACCIDENTAL
-"Devotion isn't devotion until it's INTENTIONAL" -DeVondre Adams
As with any relationship that's built, it's built through intentionality. A healthy and thriving relationship with God is no different and shoudnt be treated nor viewed as such. You can't happen upon a healthy relationship. It is only cultivated through consistent and intentional practice of doing it. What I've come to realize through my own personal life and through various conversations with others, many times our relationship with God STALLS at the place of our good intentions. But I've sinced come to realize that ' GOOD INTENTIONS + BAD PRACTICES (HABITS)=DELUSION!
- REAL DEVOTION ISN'T TIME TO GOD, IT'S TIME WITH GOD"
Often times in our efforts of building our devotional relationship, we approach it with the mindset of "this is something that I do TO God". So our devotion time looks more like a monologue of 1 person rather than a dialogue of 2 individuals. This is why many, for many, once you've read your scripture, worshipped aa little bit and prayed your prayer, the very next thing that comes out of your mouth is AMEN. One of the most selfish times in the lives of many believers is our devotion time.
"Sometimes in our hurry to FINISH, we miss where God wants to START" -DeVondre Adams
- REAL DEVOTION ISN'T FREE, IT WILL COST YOU SOMETHING\\
What I've come to learn as I've matured, is that one of the many reasons people neglect devotion, is due to its cost. You may say, well 'how does it cost?'
-Costs your time, energy, priorities and focus
-If we're not ok with the cost of something, we have a natural tendency to leave it alone
-Healthy Devotion is an INVESTMENT into ME, not God
-Devotion flows UP, not down (from us to God, not God to us)
- DEVOTION IS NOT WHAT THEY SAID, IT'S WHAT HE SAID
When many people think of devotion or a devotional life, we often picture a nice, well crafted book, journal or literature written by someone else and we utilize that as our foundational resource of getting what we need in that time. While these resources can be a good accompaniment, they should not be the direct means of our devotional nutrition. Only the Word of God can do that. One of the mistakes we make is we replace God's Word with somebody else's word and expect God to communicate with us through somebody else's lips .
- DEVOTION DOESN'T STOP WITH AMEN!
—- The fruit of a healthy devotional life is most evident in what happens after you say AMEN
-The health of your devotion life is strengthened by your life application
-How are you applying what you received in your quiet time?
-Healthy devotion carries you beyond the moment into movement
-"Not just hearers of the Word, but DOERS-James 1:22"
Application Questions
- When was the last time you spent quality and productive time with God?
- What are the priorities in my life? In what ways have these things threatened my quality time with God?
- In what ways is God calling you into deeper communion and fellowship with Him?
