Prayer stimulants and words we can pray are found in the Psalms. In active reading of the psalms we should take note of who is addressed in the various verses. It could be direct speech to God or words directed towards others or to one’s self. Join me in prayer reading of psalms 4 and 5.

All Christians at times encounter difficulty in praying. At such times it is important to understand that prayer starts with bring one's attention Godward. Genuine prayer begins inwardly before it is expressed outwardly. Believers have turned to the Psalms through the centuries to help them express their thoughts to God and to themselves and toward and with others. The Psalms gives us models of communication with God. Today we read-pray Psalm 3,"Arise, O Yahweh!

Save me, O my God! Salvation belongs to Yahweh."

We can locate prayer when God is addressed  directly by his name or roles. Sometimes the psalmist will engage in self talk and at other times people talk. The Psalms are dynamic in nature and should be read and prayed in this manner.

Happy birthday! This is a common greeting in America. Birthdays are usually significant in the western world but hardly mentioned in many eastern cultures. The question some ask is, "Why celebrate birthdays?" The Bible never mentions birthday celebrations although there were a number of days marked for celebration in the Mosaic Covenant. 

In the ancient Christian churches days of martyrdom were kept. The oldest days of celebration concerning Jesus were termed "Epiphany," which celebrated the recognition of Jesus as King by men from the east (Matthew 2) and the baptism of Jesus in the Jordan by John in which the Father announced him as his beloved Son (Matthew. 3, Mark 1, Luke 3, John 1). His baptism commenced his ministry as Messiah.

We do not know the day of the year that Jesus was birthed by Mary. However, we do know the significance of his arrival. The designation of such an event is properly termed the "Festival of the Incarnation." The Word became flesh and lived among us! In Jesus of Nazareth we have the Lord of Glory as a human!

Why do we celebrate birthdays? We are really celebrating a person's life, their uniqueness, our relationship. A good scripture to read on one's birthday is Psalm 90:12, "Teach us to number our days carefully so that we may develop wisdom in our hearts."

As a Christian, celebrating one's birthday should involve the blessing of the Lord and so my prayer for you is in the words of Ephesians 1:17, "I pray that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, would give you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of him."

Paul often began his letter to the churches with a thanksgiving to God for what he has done and is doing in them. Two of the assemblies Paul wrote were Thessaloniki and Colossae. He overflows with thankfulness because of God's work in them and how this is being demonstrated in their lives. Four things are pointed out beginning with God's sovereign grace expressed in their faith expressed in their changed lives.

God has given his Son Jesus as the great Shepherd of his people. Christ in return has appointed undershepherds. Paul is a great example of such a pastor. He gives thanks to God for his grace at work in his people at Corinth and Philippi. These thanksgivings are found at the beginning of his letters to them.

One of the most powerful testimonies in the New Testament of the transforming power of the gospel among a  group of people is seen in the opening versus of 1 Thessalonians. There Paul thanked God for the clear and obvious evidence of his mighty saving work in the lives of the Thessalonian Christians. It happened then. It can happen now!

After God has established a covenant with David and his household David comes before the presence of Yahweh God. David's prayer of response can teach us much about prayer. Prayer is an intentional come before God in humility to present our acknowledgement of him and to ask him to fulfill his will.

The first mention of prayer in the Bible is Genesis 4:26. To Seth also a son was born, and he called his name Enosh. At that time people began to call upon the name of the Lord. LORD is Yahweh. This simple phrase, calling upon the name Yahweh, functions as basic definition of prayer, a vital experience of the Christian life.

We must look to the inspired Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments for both the substance and as the final or ultimate authority for our teaching and practice.  To the inspired,  inscripturated  Word alone do we find the answer to the burning question, How does a person find acceptance with the all holy God? All humans are sinners and sin is against God's nature! How then can I, a fallen sinful human ever be welcomed into God presence by the forgiveness of my sin and righteousness?
Looking to the Bible alone, all of the Protestant Reformers of the 16th century came to see that the answer is the nature of Jesus Christ's suffering for sin once for all, and we connect to him by personal faith. It is by grace alone through faith in the living Lord Jesus Christ who died on our behalf and was raised from the dead for our justification and ascended into heaven where he serves as our Advocate, our High Priest. Romans 5:  9 Since, therefore, we have now been justified by his blood, much more shall we be saved by him from the wrath of God. 10 For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, now that we are reconciled, shall we be saved by his life. This is the core of the gospel recovered at the Protestant Reformations.

In a sense we could say that the spiritual renewal of gospel that happened in the 16th century with the Protestant Reformers was sparked by a discovery of a correct translation and interpretation of two verses of Scripture. Luther came to see that Matthew 4:17 which had been mistranslated by Jerome as penance( From that time Jesus began to preach, and to say: Do penance, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.,Douay) should read,  “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.” It was not telling people to do a performance of penance but calling them to a change of mind.
The second verse is Romans 1:17-18 " For in it (gospel) the righteousness of God is revealed from faith to faith, just as it is written: The righteous will live by faith. For God’s wrath is revealed from heaven against all godlessness and unrighteousness of people.." Luther had thought the phrase was speaking of God's direct total holiness and righteousness by which we are judged and damned. But one day by God's grace he saw the verse was referring to a passive righteousness God grants, donates, gives to the one believing in Jesus. This credited righteousness of Jesus is put to the believers account and thus we have acceptance with the righteous God.
