  • The Gospel, the Kingdom and Baptism

    Send us Fan Mail

Jesus great Commission to his disciples recorded in Matthew 28:16-20 comes in the context of the advancing of the kingdom of God. Our continuing mission as demonstrated in the preaching of the early church by the apostles and others is to proclaim the gospel of the kingdom. This good news is that the King of God's kingdom has arrived in the person and the redemptive acts of Jesus and it is now being extended through the conversion of rebel sinners to Messiah Jesus. In repenting of sin and trust in the Lord Jesus Christ we enter God's kingdom in its present form even as we pray and labor for its fullness to arrive in the return of the King! Baptism is the initiation sign of entrance into the kingdom. This is one of the meanings attached to this gospel ordinance or ritual of immersion of believers into the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. This mark the beginning of the life of discipleship.

  • Singing Prayers with Reading and Preaching God's Word

    Send us Fan Mail

We are told, actually commanded, to engage in singing in the worship of God. Singing must be in conformity to God's Word and should contain a lot of the Scripture truth. Psalms exhort us to praise God with singing and music (Psalm 149:1-2; Psalm 95:1-2). The New Testament commands expand the role of singing to engagement with our fellow worshippers.
Colossians 3:16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God.
Ephesians 5:18b-20 be filled with the Spirit,  addressing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody to the Lord with your heart,  giving thanks always and for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ,  submitting to one another out of reverence for Christ.
Illustrations of this is offered from some portions of recent services showing engagement of prayer through singing psalms, hymns and spiritual songs to the Lord and to one another.

  • Go! Preach the Gospel

    Send us Fan Mail

The commission or the command of Jesus to his disciples was and is to preach, or announce and herald the good news of eternal salvation in the person of Jesus the Son of God. The gospel concerns God's unique Son, the Son of Man who came to give his life a ransom for many. The written words of Mark and the Apostle Peter show that the gospel is the act of Jesus the Messiah in his redemptive work on behalf of sinners and he is to be proclaimed that people may repent and believe on him resulting in their eternal salvation.

  • Understanding Our Need of the Gospel

    Send us Fan Mail

For a person to come to genuine faith in Jesus Christ there some necessary understandings that must exist. Otherwise the seed of gospel lands on hard ground and does not take root. A person must be convinced he needs a Savior. This message looks at some necessary beliefs before one can understand and accept the gospel as good news. These truths revolve around God, mankind, sin, revelation and Jesus.

  • Singing Prayers of Confession of Sin in Corporate Worship

    Send us Fan Mail

In my last podcast we looked at the entrance into worship in which we can sing prayers of praise, adoration and belief to God. The second movement in biblical Christian worship that in which we engage is the acknowledgement of our sins and a calling on God for renewal by fresh cleansing. This movement helps us declare the gospel to one another. We come before a holy God but as sinful people we cannot come in our righteousness but only by his grace. This part of the worship is ripe for singing our prayer either of confession proper or the declaration of God's pardon through Christ work and our renewed dedication to walk as his children. John Calvin began his public order of service with a call to worship immediately followed by the confession of sin. The prophet functions as a model here in the worship he experience in the temple. Isaiah 6

  • Singing Our Prayers to God in Assembled Worship

    Send us Fan Mail

Jesus quoting  Isaiah 56:7 said, my house shall be called a house of prayer for all peoples.”
Christian worship includes public prayer as an essential element. This truth is reflected in the title, Book of  Common Prayer used  by Anglicans. Prayer is essential for worship.
But here is a question. How is prayer done in our gathered assemblies for corporate worship? How much are our congregations, the people present, involved in offering prayers to God? A principle way  that prayers can be offered by the people is through the structured intentional used of hymns, psalms and spiritual songs. There are certain things that work against this happening and certain steps that can be taken to make prayer happen by the singing of hymns and songs . This brief message takes a look at the first movement in our worship service from a recent Sunday gathering. The service begins with a Scriptural call to worship, opening hymn of faith declaration in the Triune God with the intent to pray to him followed by two hymns that are prayers addressed to him. We worship God through and in Jesus Christ. Come let us worship in the singing of words addressed to him!

  • The Slain Lamb in Three Religions

    Send us Fan Mail

There are two prominent yearly  feast or religious holidays that feature a lamb sacrifice. The Passover among the Jews although the lambs have not actually been killed since the Jerusalem temple was destroyed in 70 A. D.; however, the festive meal and ritual continue with a substitute meat. In Islam the Greater Eid or The Sacrifice Feast is celebrated with the actual killing of the animal usually a lamb, goat or beef and in some places a camel is performed as a re-enactment of Abraham's sacrifice of his son when a lamb was killed in place of the son.
However, the Lamb in also featured in the Christian faith but not as an animal killed but the memorial meal of the Messiah Jesus as the fulfillment of Abraham's sacrifice and as the true Passover Lamb who takes away the sin of the world. What is foreshadowed  in the historical events of Adam's fall and God's clothing of them with animal skin, Abraham's sacrifice and Moses and the Hebrews slaying of the Passover lamb is all fulfilled in the person and the atoning sacrifice followed by resurrection of Jesus the Christ.

  • Jesus' Resurrection Day Commission

    Send us Fan Mail

Although we often associate Jesus' Great Commission with his appearance in Galilee and the words recorded in Matthew 28, Jesus gave his disciples the commission on a number of occasions during the 40 days between his resurrection and ascension into heaven.  The first time was on the very evening of the day he was raised back to life, recorded in Luke 24 and John 20. His command to share the good news of himself - his person and his accomplishment through the cross and resurrection echoes his prayer to the Father in John 17:21, "As the Father has sent me, even so I am sending you.”

  • Have You Prayed Today?

    Send us Fan Mail

After observing the Lord Jesus often in prayer one of his disciples on behalf of all of them ask him to teach them to pray. Luke 11:1-4. In response Jesus said:
    When you pray, say:

    “Father, hallowed be your name.
    Your kingdom come.
Give us each day our daily bread,
     and forgive us our sins,
for we ourselves forgive everyone who is indebted to us.
And lead us not into temptation.”

We can and should set aside time each day for prayer in a disciplined way. However, prayer can also take the form of a spontaneous expressions.

A Reading of Revelation 5 with portions of a sermon text by  Martyn Lloyd Jones  on Revelation 6-7. To correctly understand the prophecy of John in Revelation we must remember the theme.  The revelation of Jesus Christ that God gave him to show his servants what must soon take place. The book is about the Lord Jesus Christ who is in the midst of his churches who are in the world. They have been saved by his blood and resurrection and they bear witness to him by declaring the gospel and from among humanity God calls and redeems his elect.  God's people in the hostile world face opposition but the Lion who is the Lamb is the Savior. His people are safe and secure in him.
The meaning of this book did not need to wait two thousand years for us to unlock its meaning. The meaning was given to those who first received it and it is found in the symbols and images of the vision. It spoke powerfully to them and it can to us also if will put aside our newspapers and open the book and read it. We will see Christ and his people engaged in conflict with the kingdoms of this world and we take encouragement and are confident in our Lord's victory!
