In Philippians chapter 1, the Apostle Paul writes a heartfelt letter to the church in Philippi, expressing his gratitude and joy for their partnership in the gospel. He begins by affirming his love and appreciation for the Philippians, praying for them with joy and confidence that God will complete the good work He began in them.
Paul shares his current circumstances, being imprisoned, yet he emphasizes that his situation has actually served to advance the gospel. His boldness in preaching has inspired others to speak the Word of God more courageously. He acknowledges that while some preach Christ out of envy or rivalry, others do so out of goodwill, and he rejoices that, regardless of their motives, Christ is being proclaimed.
The chapter concludes with Paul expressing his desire to continue living for Christ, stating that to live is Christ and to die is gain. He is torn between the desire to depart and be with Christ and the need to remain for the sake of the Philippians. Paul encourages them to stand firm in their faith and live in a manner worthy of the gospel.
