Alternative Title: "A Man of Sorrows: The Melancholic Christ and our Melancholy, the cause, cure, and root of the matter wherein it is pertaining to the anguish of the soul forsaken by God and afflicted; an examination of the inner life of Christ through His words on the cross in connection to Psalm XXII and Isaiah LIII, namely 'Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani', or, 'My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?' wherein it shall be shewn three things: the first, that there is an affliction of the soul that sees not the friendly presence of God yet is not sinful; the second, that this affliction of the soul has a cure; third, that the cure is found in the presence, promises, and protection of our faithful High Priest Christ Jesus the Lord; further, it shall be shewn that faith, hope, and love need not cease in sorrow but may rather be refined by it, leading to a greater measure of each toward God in the midst of, and on the other side of, the deepest of melancholies even if that be in the new heavens and earth; further, an elaboration on the first part- the cause of affliction may be mixed, but may be solitary, as in Christ that it be a deep sorrow and grief, the cure of affliction however is singular; yea, that it be in Christ alone and in his person and promises; the root of affliction grows up in the thorns and thistles of curses which Christ bears upon his head and shall incinerate in the light of his glory."
