We look today at chapter 6 of A.B. Bruce’s book and what we can learn from the request that the apostles asked Jesus "Teach us to pray." The apostles got to witness Jesus pray in public and in private and they noticed something special about that relationship that they wanted the same for themselves. Jesus responds to their request with what we call the “Lord’s Prayer” and what A.B. Bruce refers to as the ABCs of prayer. Our prayer life requires us to be patient and persistent and sometimes we lack the words to say but the far greater problem is to lack the faith in our prayer life. Jesus uses two parables to explain this lack of faith on our part. In our prayer life the possible answers are yes, no, and wait, and through his teaching on prayer he wanted to inspire hope in God even in the darkest hours of our life. We pray and hope in God because Jesus tells us to in his inspiring words “Ask and you will receive.”

Today we look at the great importance of being a good witness. The apostles like children needed to be taught basics first so that they could mature into what God needed them to be. The apostle where privileged to see so many great things throughout the ministry of Jesus, and just the fact that Jesus’ miracles were not the first wonderful thing that God had done throughout history but they were the most wonderful it must have been a sight to see. First the apostles were taught the doctrine of the kingdom then they were shone the work of the kingdom through the ministry of Jesus. Jesus’ seemingly favorite form of teaching was in the form of parables which were earthy stories with spiritual application, taking something simple to understand and making it grand in nature. We have been waiting for this day since the beginning of this series, Jesus chooses his twelve. These

twelve chosen men start as students of Christian doctrine, to fellow observers of Jesus to ambassadors

sent to change the world. The number twelve was not an accident it was chosen by Jesus to hold

significance (i.e., 12 tribes, 12 gates in heaven, etc.…). There are three major groups of the twelve

apostles and in these groups, we get a miniature early example of what the church should and will look

like. The three major points that we pull out of A.B. Bruce’s book here are these; 1. These twelve were

witnesses and ambassadors for Christ and that it does not necessarily take a great man to make a good

witness, at least by human standards. 2. Not all men can and should be leaders we need good followers.

3. The apostles were at the most base level servants of Christ in all that they did.

Today we are in chapter three of A.B. Bruce’s The Training of the Twelve. In todays episode we focus on the calling of Matthew the Publican, or better known as the Tax Collector. The choosing of Matthew highlights the fact that the “foolishness” of God is so much wiser than the wisdom of men. Jesus cuts right to the heart of the matter and looks beyond the physical and piers directly to the heart and mind of the man. Matthew whose name means “Gift of God” changes from taking from people to giving the greatest gift. We learn that we should be ready to follow Jesus just like Matthew. At the end of the episode, we spend some time on the scandal of the party at Matthew’s house with Jesus.

This week we look at chapter two of A.B. Bruce’s The Training of the Twelve. In this episode we see the

call from the Savior to regular men, looking at the accounts in the gospels Matthew, Mark and Luke. We

learn that these are a band of brothers that are called for a great work, and without their witness of the

things to come in Jesus’ teaching, the doctrine and the memory of our Lord would be lost. A.B. Bruce

uses the analogy of a polished mirror reflecting the image of Christ as one of the chief responsibilities of

these fishers of men. But in order to take on this great task in front of them they would have to unlearn

what they had learned and be ready to listen and obey the Master.

Join us as we start this endeavor in studying this book. This first episode we delve into the beginning where else? Seemingly small almost insignificant events can lead to greatness and that is the case of the church and the beginning of Jesus’ ministry. In John 1, John the Baptiste says “Behold the Lamb of God…” and five men from nowhere are introduced to Jesus. They gather around the feet of Jesus because there is something different about his teaching. These men were tired of the religion that was in fashion at the time, a religion that was based on works and that was seemingly shallow. They truly hungered and thirsted for real righteousness, and they found Jesus. A.B. Bruce spends time in this first chapter introducing these 5 men that were among the first of Jesus’s apostles and what we can learn from these small beginnings, and of course Jesus says you will see greater things than these and he was right.

The Scripture is very plain on how Christians are to reproduce themselves spiritually. Paul tells Timothy, “And the things you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses, these entrust to faithful men, who will be able to teach others also” (2 Timothy 2:2).

Many individuals in times past have studied the Scripture and written volumes of insightful and meaningful works that can fortify, encourage and motivate. The objective of this Biblical Book Review podcast is to present some of the best of these books, several of them coming from earlier centuries, and glean valuable information in order to get us back into the Book of books, the Holy Bible.
