“I Never Knew You” — A Wake‑Up Call to the Church

Most people in hell were absolutely convinced they were on their way to heaven. They sat in church. They lifted their hands. They sang the hymns. They prayed the prayers. They spoke the name of Jesus with confidence. But on the last day, they heard four words that shattered every illusion:
“I never knew you.”  
(Matthew 7:21–23)

This is not a comforting message.
This is not a soothing message.
This is a warning—a trumpet blast in the night, echoing the urgency of men like Charles Spurgeon.

To convict, not comfort.
To shake, not soothe.

Examine yourself.
Search your heart.

This is a Spotlight on the Scriptures: Psalms 51:10-13 Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me. Cast me not away from your presence and take not your Holy Spirit from me. Restore to me the joy of your salvation and uphold me with a willing spirit. Then I will teach transgressors your ways, and sinners will return to you.

When David cried out, “Create in me a clean heart, O God,” and pleaded, “Take not thy Holy Spirit from me,” he wasn’t worried about losing salvation—no, that wasn’t the issue. He wasn’t talking about the indwelling of the Spirit like we know it today, because in the Old Testament, the Spirit didn’t dwell in believers forever like He does in the New Covenant. What David feared was losing the anointing. He was desperate not to forfeit the divine assignment, the royal calling, the sacred empowerment that came upon him when Samuel poured oil on his head and the Spirit of the Lord rushed in like fire (1 Samuel 16:13).

David had seen what happened to Saul—how the Spirit departed, how the calling collapsed, how the man who once stood tall ended up falling hard. And David said, “Lord, don’t let that be me. Don’t let me lose the joy of your salvation. Restore it! Revive it! Rekindle it!” Why? So, he could rise again—not just for himself, but to lead others out of sin, into repentance, into faith, into obedience.

That’s the cry of a man who knows he’s been chosen. That’s the prayer of someone who refuses to let failure cancel his future. And that ought to be our desire too—not just to be saved, but to be sent. Not just to be forgiven, but to be fruitful. Not just to be cleansed, but to be called!

This is a Spotlight on the Scriptures: Matthew 16:24 Then Jesus told his disciples, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. 

Let’s be real, saints— nobody rolls out of bed shouting, “Today’s the day I crucify my flesh!” We don’t wake up craving self-denial. We want comfort, convenience, control. But hear me: if you want to walk in the lordship of Christ, if you want to taste the provision of heaven, if you want to live under the covering of the King, then you’ve got to learn the holy art of saying “no” to self.

No to pride. No to impulse. No to the flesh that wants to rule the throne of your heart.

Because the crown comes after the cross. The glory comes after the grind. And the blessing flows where obedience grows.

Jesus said, “If any man would come after me, let him deny himself…” Not just once. Not just on Sunday. But daily. That means every morning is a fresh altar. Every choice is a fresh sacrifice. Every “no” to self is a “yes” to the Savior.

So don’t just chase the benefits of Christ—embrace the boundaries He sets. Because when you say “no” to you, you make room for all of Him.

The Christian life doesn’t begin with self-improvement—it begins with divine rescue. We weren’t just struggling; we were dead in sin. We weren’t just broken; we were bound and blind. But God, rich in mercy, didn’t wait for us to clean ourselves up—He stepped into our mess and called us out by grace.

 Let the church say it loud: We are not good—we are graced.

• Paul said, “I am the chief of sinners.”
• Isaiah cried, “Woe is me!”
• David pleaded, “Create in me a clean heart…”

And yet, the blood still speaks. The cross still covers. The grace still reaches.

So yes, we were vile. But now we’re victorious. We were wretches. But now we’re washed. We were lost. But now we’re loved. That’s why we don’t boast in ourselves—we boast in the Lord. Because if it had not been for the grace of God, we’d still be in the pit, still chasing shadows, still calling sin sweet. So go ahead and shout it: “I’m not good—I’m forgiven!” That’s the anthem of the redeemed.

This is a Spotlight on the Scriptures: Malachi 3:10 Bring the full tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. And thereby put me to the test, says the LORD of hosts, if I will not open the windows of heaven for you and pour down for you a blessing until there is no more need. 

Now hear me, beloved: we are not bound by the tithe system today. That was law—but we live under grace. And grace doesn’t demand a percentage; it invites a posture.

There are saints—humble, faithful, barely scraping by—for whom ten percent would feel like a mountain too steep to climb. And there are others, blessed beyond measure, whose barns overflow, who could give far more than a tithe—yes, even up to what the government allows for deductions—and still have plenty left over.

Some could give generously. Some could give sacrificially. But truth be told? Few are giving like that.

So let’s be clear: the tithe may serve as a measuring stick, a helpful guide, a starting point for generosity—but it is not a legal requirement. It is not binding. It is not the bar of righteousness.

God isn’t looking for calculators. He’s looking for cheerful givers. Not those who give by compulsion, but those who give by conviction. Not those who give to fulfill a rule, but those who give to reflect a relationship.

So don’t ask, “How much must I give?” Ask, “How much can I give to show my love for the One who gave it all?”
