Education is at the heart of what we do to make Maine better for people walking and biking. From bike rodeos and in-class bike/bed safety for kids, to fix-a-bike, urban cycling classes, and off-road bicycle education for adults, the Bicycle Coalition of Maine offers a wide range of educational programming.

The 131st Legislature has been packed with bills relating to bike & pedestrian infrastructure, access, and safety, and the team at the BCM has been hard at work staying on top of it all and working with partners and legislators to advocate for you! We discuss the status of current bills and how you can help enact policy that supports making Maine better for bicycling and walking.

Learn how to create an active & engaging event to teach safe biking practices to community youth. We’ll share planning logistics, how to build a continuous-flow mock traffic course, and tips to ensure a successful event. Bicycle rodeos are one of our favorite safe cycling teaching tools!

Bicycling + Packrafting = Bikerafting! Packrafts are ultraportable inflatable rafts that enable one to go on fun hybrid pedal / paddle adventures. We visit special guest Alejandro Strong of Packraft Maine (https://www.packraftme.com) to learn more about bikerafting equipment, how it all comes together, and how best to get started. We even highlight some beginner bikerafting routes right here in Maine!

BCM chats with Rob Lavoie. Rob is the former President of the Greater Portland NEMBA Chapter, a trail builder and now Gorham City Council Member. He was also one of the minds behind building the Gorham trail system and the pump track namesake (not his choice). We talk with Rob about what inspired him and others to make trails in their town, and what it took to make it happen!
