Le protagoniste, Philippe Abrams, est directeur de la poste en Provence, au sud de la France. Sa femme lui fait pression pour trouver un job à côté de la mer et il fraude pour lui faire plaisir. Malheureusement, son plan ne marche pas et il doit déménager au nord, dans une ville qui s’appelle Bergues. Sa femme et son fils refusent d’y aller avec lui, donc il y va tout seul. Philippe connaît seulement les stéréotypes et clichés du nord, donc c’est un cauchemar pour lui. Il pense que le nord est une région très froide où les gens sont mauvais et où les conditions de vie sont misérables. En plus, les ch’tis, qui sont les gens du nord, parlent avec un accent fort et difficile à comprendre. Mais à sa surprise, c’est totalement le contraire: les gens sont très sympas, très hospitaliers et il aime beaucoup habiter avec eux. Et puis il ment à sa femme en lui faisant croire que le Nord est horrible. Pour le consoler, elle vient lui rendre visite et elle découvre le mensonge…
Trois ans plus tard, Philippe doit revenir à la maison et il est encore une fois très triste. Il y a un dicton ch’ti qui dit: “Quand on vient dans le Nord, on pleure deux fois : quand on arrive et quand on repart.”

The protagonist, Philippe Abrams, is a director at the post in Provence, in the south of France. His wife pressures him to find a job near the sea and he frauds to please her. Unfortunately, his plan did not work and he has to move to the north, in a city called Bergues. His wife and his son refuse to go with him, so he goes there all alone. Philippe only knows the stereotypes and cliches of the north, so it is a nightmare for him. He thinks that the north is a very cold region where the people are bad and where the living conditions are miserable. Moreover, the ch’tis, that are the people of the north, speak with a strong accent that is hard to understand. But to his surprise, it’s totally the contrary: the people are very nice, very hospitable and he really likes to live with them. Then he lies to his wife letting her believe that the North is horrible. To console him, she comes to visit him and she finds out about the lie..
Three years later, Philippe has to go back home and he is very sad again. There is a ch’ti saying that goes: “When you come to the North, you cry twice: when you first arrive and when you leave.”
