The National Parks Arts Foundation (NPAF) creates unique artist-in-residence programs within various units within the National Park Service. This Big Blend Radio segment features Tanya Ortega – Photographer and Founder of National Parks Arts Foundation (NPAF), and world renown combat artist Dr. Chip Beck, who will be NPAF’s artist-in-residence at Gettysburg National Military Park from mid-November through mid-December 2017. 

Chip Beck, a retired US Navy Combat Artist  and editorial cartoonist, has depicted more than 20 wars on four continents from 1969 to 2011, including conflicts in Africa, Indochina, the Middle East, and Central and South America. He is a member of the American Association of Editorial Cartoonists, a past Board Member of the National Cartoonists Society, an active member of the Loudoun Sketch Club, and founder of Political Graphics Service in Arlington, Virginia.

Victoria Chick, contemporary figurative artist and early 19th/20th century print collector, discusses the work and career of Billy Morrow Jackson, an American realist who pushed realism in metaphorical directions with layers of social meaning. In looking at the entire career of visual artist Billy Morrow Jackson, one can see a thread of reality based on his sensitivity to his surroundings, both physical and social.  

His paintings are often compared to those of Edward Hopper or Andrew Wyeth.The sense of quiet, contemplation, or, even, loneliness attributed to paintings by those artists is also felt in Jackson’s paintings, particularly his subjects of interiors with a figure.
