When the International Olympic Committee added surfing as an official event for the 2020 Olympics, China was among the countries that quickly formed their official surfing teams and have since “invested heavily in employing elite level training and facilities—including a $26 million wave pool patterned after Kelly Slater’s Surf Ranch.” They hired Coach Dris Mi as head coach to implement goal-setting strategies, breathwork, and much more.

In 2019, she swept the WSL Big Wave Awards winning the "Biggest Wave" category in addition to the "Women's Performance Award". The last three winters she has dedicated to training in Nazaré where she now resides--believed to hold the tallest waves on the planet. This February, right before Europe went into lockdown due to COVID-19, she surfed the biggest wave of her career which is now being considered for the Guinness World Records. Maya Gabeira currently holds the world record at 68 feet (20.72 meters) for the largest wave ever ridden by a female surfer.
