The BigBrotherAward in the Technology category goes to Google for the AI assistant Gemini, which is now clandestinely, but compulsorily installed on Android smartphones. Gemini has access to wide-ranging usage and communication data, which are used to train Google’s AI and also reviewed by human examiners. This could include full chat histories – without consent from communication partners. To deactivate this AI assistant, users have to make complex changes in several menus.

Der BigBrotherAward in der Kategorie Technik geht an Google für den KI-Assistenten Gemini, der ab jetzt unauffällig, aber zwangsweise auf Android Mobiltelefonen installiert wird. Gemini erhält Zugriff auf umfangreiche Nutzungs- und Kommunikationsdaten, die für das Training von Googles KI genutzt und auch von menschlichen Mitarbeitenden eingesehen werden. Darunter könnten komplette Chatverläufe fallen – ohne dass der Kommunikationspartner eingewilligt hat. Die Deaktivierung dieses KI-Assistenten erfordert komplexe Einstellungen in verschiedenen Menüs.

Beitrag zu den BigBrotherAwards 2025 in der Sendung Lokalzeit OWL des WDR vom 10. Oktober 2025. On October 10, 2025, the BigBrotherAwards were presented for the 25th time at the Hechelei Bielefeld. At the gala, we honored the worst cases of data protection and fundamental rights violations.

New this year: our new jury member Elisabeth Niekrenz and guest speaker Katharina Just. In addition, TecKids contributed their own entries for the first time. The event was hosted by Ralph Caspers (known from the TV show “Sendung mit der Maus”).

Am 10. Oktober 2025 wurden in der Hechelei Bielefeld die BigBrotherAwards zum 25. Mal verliehen. In der Gala zeichneten wir die schlimmsten Fälle von Datenschutz- und Grundrechtsverletzungen aus.

Neu in diesem Jahr: Unser neues Jurymitglied Elisabeth Niekrenz und die Gastlaudatorin Katharina Just. Außerdem erstmals eigene Beiträge der Teckids. Moderiert wurde die Veranstaltung von Ralph Caspers (bekannt aus der „Sendung mit der Maus“).

In a video statement for the BigBrotherAwards, media scientist and author Björn Staschen talks about the current situation in social media, politics and civil liberties – and a supposedly dystopian future.

The BigBrotherAward 2024 in the category “Health” goes to the Federal Minister of Health, Karl Lauterbach for the European Health Data Space, EHDS for short, for which he shares responsibility, as well as for its implementation into national law, the Law for the Use of Health Data. These two laws permit the processing of all of our most sensitive health data, such as visits to the general practitioner or hospital treatments, following mostly unspecified procedures and without the necessary precautions.

The BigBrotherAward 2024 in the “Authorities and Administration” category goes to the Police of the State of Saxony, represented by the Interior Minister of Saxony, Armin Schuster, for pioneering work on their “Video-based Person Identification System” (short: PerIS), which is designed to identify suspects in police investigations in a matter of seconds. It involves both stationary and mobile cameras which biometrically capture large numbers of uninvolved persons. The system is now being used in several German states and gives a spooky premonition of new surveillance tools for the police.
