    Poor sound
Lots of noise and otherwise hard to listen to....if you don't mind that, it is a good example of old, old radio drama.

    Classic story, well worth rereading
The last time I read this book was close to 60 years ago, while still in high school, where it was assigned, as one of the required books for the term, in our Freshman English class. That was way back, when schools actually required students to read at least 4 books, each semester of every year, just for their English course. While the syntax and language are, at times, arcane, the story is a classic one, to which I recommend all readers.
    Good man found his way
    I read this book , when I was 10or 12 years old.
I was amazed how I saw Robinson Crusoe and Friday this time. I saw a man doing penance for some wrong dealings , and earning his way back to society.
    A classic
I tried to read this book when I was a teenager and I was put off by the language and writing style. This time I stayed with it and was glad I did. The writing style is quite a bit different than today's. Some of the sentences in this book were three pages long. I viewed it on a Kindle and was glad to have the dictionary available to look up some of the terms used. Overall a very good book. It dragged in some spots, especially when he spends forty pages discussing why the settlers should marry the women they've lived with. The scanning was haphazard - there was no editing after it was scanned, so page numbers and odd notations are scattered randomly throughout. It was free, so I can't complain too much.
Perfect for someone who still enjoys picking up a book!
Purchased as a gift for a family member. This was not a new copy and I did not want a new one. The condition was exactly as stated in the description. Classic story and the great feel of an old book. Quite a combination.
    Good read!
How do you get as old as me and not have read Robinson Crusoe? I don't know the answer to that question. My grandson suggested that I read it, and I did. I thoroughly enjoyed it!

and one of the best, and best-written horror stories in literature
If you're reading this review, you only have one question. You're not looking for a book review, you already know it's a classic. You already know this is the most original, and one of the best, and best-written horror stories in literature. You may or may not like the story, but that's a matter of personal taste. A lot of people don't like Shakespeare, but no one questions whether he was a good writer or not. If you don't like the writing style, it's because you aren't familiar with the English of this period. Nearly eighty years before Stoker's "Dracula" ( an idea stolen from Polidori's "The Vampyre", which was an idea stolen from LeFanu's "Carmilla"), this most-original horror masterpiece was born. So, your only question is, "Is this really the uncensored 1818 version? Because I've only seen one other verified version, and it's over twenty dollars in paperback. All the others claiming to be the 1818 version have been disproved." YES, as far as I can tell, it is. The only preface is Shelley's own original. There is no introduction, no commentary or editorial credits whatsoever. There are no illustrations, and the spelling and language have not been edited. Have a good thesaurus handy. So, here it is, the author's original script, no frills, for a bargain price. Which is exactly what I was looking for.
Not what the movies would have you believe...
I never saw an entire Frankenstein film, only fragments here and there, but those left me with an impression that is far from the essence of Mary Shelley's book, Frankenstein. For one, Frankenstein is not even the name of the monster; it is the name of the man, Victor Frankenstein, who created the monster. But that is minor. The true surprise was how many issues relevant to today this book brings up--obligation to family; personal responsibility; fate; how far can science ethically go; does man have a right to create life; what is our responsibility for life we've created--these are a few intriguing questions raised. I enjoyed the book, but better than the book was the discussion I participated in with a group of friends; it was definitely one of the best I've ever been involved in. This is a great book to read with a friend or two who will discuss it with you.

Perhaps the most famous vampire story of all time, Dracula is an awesome tale of a thrillingly bloodthirsty vampire whose nocturnal atrocities embody the dark underside of an outwardly moralistic age. There he is met with resistance from a small band of men and women, led by the intrepid Professor Abraham Van Helsing. Will the people be able to keep the fearsome Dracula from terrorizing their community?

Dracula classics collection by Brilliance audio
Dracula from the classics collection by Brilliance audio was excellent.
This is one of the few versions that has Stoker's dedication, and the original introduction that begins, 'How these papers have been placed in sequence will be made manifest in the reading of them.'
To my mind, the introduction gives the text a sense of realism that it lacks with out it.
Each narrator gave distinct voices for the characters they narrated. My two personal favorites were Tom Casaletto and Michael Page.
Tom Casaletto's english accent was superb. If I didn't know better, I'd think he was British. You get to here it early on as Mr. Casaletto is the one that narrates the introduction along with the letters, newspaper articles, chapter titles, and the log from Varna to Whitby.
Michael Page's narration of DR. John Seward was the best narration of this version. A great example is at the end of chapter 18 when Mr. Page voices Renfield pleading to be let go. I compared this version to the Naxos audio version and Mr. Page came out the winner by a long shot. Fredric Scadron, Mary Beth Quillen Gregor, and Sheila Hart should not be forgotten either. They narrated Jonathan Harker, Mina Harker, and Lucy Westinra respectively. Each narrator lived their parts as if they were the character.
All in all, a great reading. I highly recommend this version.
needs more meat in the end
I love the story, good versus an older evil, and although it held my attention so well, the ending left me desiring more.
A more climactic death of our Dracula was befitting of the character. He has withstood centuries and yet is killed so easily in the end.

    Publisher: Recorded Books
Ratings: 5 of 5 out of 5 votes
    Genres: Classics, British Literature
    Publisher's Summary:
It can reasonably be argued that the British invented the novel. And to understand the way in which the novel, as a literary form, developed in Britain is key to understanding the literary form itself. In this first of a two-part series, beloved Modern Scholar professor Timothy B. Shutt takes listeners on a panoramic journey across the colorful landscape of British novelists beginning with Daniel Defoe in the early 18th century all the way to the mesmerizing works of Jane Austen in the early 19th Century. Professor Shutt begins by exploring exactly what a novel is - and what it isn't - and what defines this unique literary expression. He explores both its antecedents and precursors and where exactly its place in the literary landscape can be found. He then moves on to Defoe's great work Robinson Crusoe which arguably marks the birth of the novel. Subsequent lectures explore works by powerful literary forces such as Samuel Richardson, Henry Fielding, Laurence Sterne, and Sir Walter Scott. Each is brought to life with Shutt's trademark style, flare, and formidable insights, leaving the listener not only with a solid grasp of this literary form, but also feeling as if they have been on an epic journey through some of the most amazing literary works ever penned.
    Members Reviews:
As good as I'd hoped it would be
Timothy Shutt has recorded quite a few of these Modern Scholar lecture series. Of the ones of his I've listened to, this is my favorite.
After an introductory lecture, he devotes one lecture each to Defoe, Richardson, Fielding, Sterne, Smollett (along with a discussion of the sentimental novel and the gothic novel), Scott, and Austen. In each, he talks interestingly for about half an hour, giving biographical details, descriptions (with appreciation and criticism) of the works, and a few appropriate digressions and personal notes. (For instance, you'll learn what result he got on an online "Which Jane Austen heroine are you?" quiz.)
Shutt comes across as genial, avuncular, and conversational, yet very knowledgeable. My only complaint, aside from wanting more, is that his voice is an acquired taste (at times gruff, hoarse, or squeaky), and he speaks slowly enough that it would have bothered me if I were not listening on a device that allowed me too increase the playback speed.

    Members Reviews:
An original story, the like of which is both rare and much appreciated.
I would give it a solid 5 stars. Itâs not everyoneâs cup of tea, though the beautiful spell it weaves certainly captivated me. The book has some lovely turns of phrase, having been written at a different time, perhaps when folks took greater pride in their communicational style (or it could just be that I too am from a different time). The author gave a great deal of consideration toward imagining the world through the eyes of his subject and whilst it amounts to an impossible task, has done so in a believable, insightful and artfully though-provoking way. When I finish a book I often ask myself if I would enjoy reading it again, at some future point. In this case, the answer is definitely yes.
    A jewel
I first read this book as a kid in the 1950's. A neighbor loaned it to me. I was fascinated by it, the first time I had read a book devoted to one animal in a personified way. It still evokes exactly the same feelings now as it did then. While a pure scientist might object to how personified and dramatized it is, based on reading other books on bears and grizzlies in particular, it seems pretty fact-based to me. A reader might wonder where the book, essentially a chronology, is going, but it does build to the conclusion, which is not earth-shattering but as touching and emotional as it is simple. It really conveys many things that we humans can relate to and feel. I've given it to my oldest child to read, and will eventually give it to the others.
The book is an easy read, has a simple style, and really helps the reader picture how things look from the animals' perspective. Animals do have intelligence and emotions, recent learnings show that even sharks do, so this book is probably more relevant and true to life than when it was written.
I recommend it to readers from about age 10 to the oldest adult will all enjoy it and come away thinking and feeling in ways they didn't expect.
    The ring of Life
I haven't read it in decades. I'm buying a copy for my library - maybe I'll be able to read it to the grandkids - or vice versa :) A fairly short story about the life and death of a grizzly. What stands out in my mind after all these years is the way the aging process is made part of life. Probably best for the budding naturalist rather than those who think predation is a dirty word and all carnivores should be muzzled. A great philosophical work for those who want to teach some of Nature's ways to the young. Its a pretty transparent allegory of our lives. Deals (gently but clearly) with topics like death, fear, competition - winning and loosing. I'd say ages 8 to 13, best read together with your child. (At least the first time!) I also loved his Two Little Savages - about camping & the outdoors.
    If bears could only talk
I enjoyed the story about the bear, I found it to be an easy read and interesting also.
