An ideal book for an eight year old

Well written and emperically demonstrated. The book asks you to use some string, a rubber band, a bobbin, screwdriver, paper clip and an empty can of soda to create pulleys. There is also a nice primer on basic physics that is easily understood.

This is an excellent book for young students to learn a bout pulleys (simple machines) ...

Every day you do work of some sort of another, even if you don't think it's work. For example, when you play cards you are actually working. If you work up a sweat trying to push on the side of a house and move it you are not. When a scientist defines work he or she means that "work is using a force to move an object" and that "force is a push or a pull." You can move cards, but unless you are Superman, you aren't going to move a house simply by pushing it. If you turn the pages of a book, no matter how easy it seems, you are actually working because if something moves "work has been done."

There are two kinds of machines, simple and complicated, that we use to make our work easier. You'll learn the difference between the two kinds and once you do perhaps you can point out several different kinds of machines around you. You'll also learn about how gravity factors into the work formula. For example, it is much easier to lower something to the ground than lift it because gravity helps you. There are several experiments in this book that will show you how force works when you use different kinds of pulleys. In this book you'll also learn about measuring force, friction, different kinds of pulleys and their functions (fixed, moveable, and compound), and you'll learn many other interesting facts about how pulleys work.

This is an excellent book for young students to learn a bout pulleys (simple machines). The most striking feature of this book are the detailed experiments that children can run to demonstrate what pulleys are and how they work. There are no complicated or expensive materials to purchase as most are readily available (spools, screwdriver, tape, straw, string, soda can, etc.). The only thing that may be necessary to purchase would be a spring scale to measure the amount of force needed to life a load. The necessary equipment needed for each experiment is listed in the text and shown in a visual display. Photographs clearly show how students are working through each pulley experiment. In the back of the book is an index, a glossary, and additional recommended book and website resources to explore.

How Do Those Apples Get To The Store? (a review of From Shoot to Apple)

This is a nice book for children that uses bright photographs to explain how apples make it from the fields into our homes. It begins by saying "Yum! An Apple!" How does it grow?". And then the author gets down to the nitty gritty of the matter and explains to us that farmers use parts from two apple trees to start a new apple tree. This is when the book discusses "shoots" and we get to see how the grafting is done.

After that, book describes, in simple terms, how a 3-year old tree will flower, and how after the petals fall that the nascent apples are left behind. It quickly shows how apples grow, are picked, and then make their way to markets, where finally they reach us.

Talking Points :::

I have to say that I learned some things from this book. Not so much from the text but from the photos.

To that end, I thought the pictures were well chosen. Including macro and more close up shots when appropriate.

The age range for this book would is fairly wide. Children as young as 4 and perhaps as old as 8 or 9 might get something out of it, even though it it is written at a First Grade level (see AR info below).

The font is large, and there isn't a great deal of text per page. As minimal as it is there is still enough to adequate explain to children what they are seeing.

From Shoot to Apple would be good for the classroom or for homeschoolers. It's a quick read that covers material nicely.

Good book with a good price. Came quickly

This is an excellent book that outlines the growth of a tadpole to a frog ...

When anyone thinks about what a frog sounds like, they say ribbit, ribbit! Frogs don't start out looking like frogs, but instead start out as a mass of eggs that a mother frog lays. They are black and "thick goo covers the eggs to protect them." The little animal inside the egg stays there for a month and then hatches into a tadpole. They still don't look like frogs, but instead look more like little black fish. The tadpoles do have gills like fish so they can breathe under water.

At first the tadpole has to hang onto something in the water because it is not strong enough to swim. When it starts to grow its tail gets longer until it can swim. The tadpole uses up energy and gets hungry. It "eats tiny plants that grow underwater" and sometimes eats other tadpoles. You'll also learn about the bumps that appear on its body, how they grow into legs, the growth of their lungs, when it "leaves the water" to become a froglet, and how you'll know when it becomes a frog.

This is an excellent book that outlines the growth of a tadpole to a frog. This is a very basic, but high interest, beginning nonfiction book that newly independent readers will enjoy. Bold full page photographic illustrations follow a titled paragraph. For example, when we learn about what the tadpole eats, the simple, bold print title reads "The tadpole starts to eat." In the back of the book is an index and glossary. This is one title in the series, "Start to Finish." There are free downloadable educational resources on the publisher's website.

Tadpole Lover in the House

This book is a perfect introduction for beginning readers to the life cycle of frogs. My little guy is four and crazy about the metamorphosis process. Appropriate vocabulary is emphasized, and the photographs are large and clearly relate the concepts to young minds. Even though the book is only 24 pages long, it provides you with the opportunity to discuss table of contents and index with your little guys. We've read this many times, and he still loves it.

Definitely could add to a PK-3 classroom library, as well.

Pirates are nothing new. In fact Viking pirates, "the evil of the north," were at it hundreds of years ago. One of the more "famous targets was the abbey at Holy Isle in northeastern England." Their raid got them all kinds of valuables and unfortunately, many monks died. These feared and fearless pirates were the scourge of their time. Perhaps you've seen Johnny Depp in the "Pirates of the Caribbean." Many believe that his character, Captain Jack Sparrow, just might have been Bartholomew Roberts. He wasn't always a pirate, but once he became one he seemed to have a knack for it. One of his first ventures netted him "forty thousand gold coins and jewels." This is an action-packed look at pirates from the Vikings to those who still roam the seas. Movies have depicted some of these characters as daring, exiting people, but in reality they could be brutal. This book doesn't hold the punches and the young reader will hear all about some of the shocking things they did. The layout is vibrant with photographs, art reproductions, and numerous informative sidebars. For example, some small ones define unusual words such as gibbet and pillage. This is the wildest, most unusual case the Chicagoland Detective Agency has ever had!

Raf Hernandez was hard at work in his Hernandez & Sons Pet Supply Store. The business at hand was working on his project for the school science fair. A jet pack would wow them all if he could only figure out a way to extend the battery life. Raf was a partner in the Chicagoland Detective Agency. "No case too weird" was their motto, but this time Bradley, a talking "doggie Einstein," just might disagree with it this time `round. Megan Yamamura, age 13 1/2, a "supersleuth and tracer of lost princesses," was their other partner. Megan was into haiku-speak, but it wouldn't be long before she was tweeting like a lovebird instead.

Luna Zimmerman was in big time trouble and needed someone from Chicagoland to help her out. Someone had stolen some potions from her locker at James A. Garfield Middle School. It was a case of epic proportions (maybe epic potions) because all her potions had been stolen. "Those potions," she told the detectives, "are very powerful and they can be dangerous if they're not used correctly." One other little detail caught their attention. Luna had a "mystery stalker," but perhaps it was just a feeling. She felt like there was someone staring at her. Ah, ha! It was because there was.

There was one potion that didn't get stolen. "Love Potion no. 4", a potion that somehow made it into Megan's cuppa tea. It worked! Not on the right person though. Lovesick was not the word for Megan who was soon knitting a sweater for her "honey bunch." Huh? The case could fall apart if something wasn't done. The rest of the potions had fallen into the hands of a wannabe "master criminal, a super villain." It was a wiccan wicked mess and this case was probably the weirdest yet. Bradley was whipping up "something for a worst-case scenario," but this one just had to be the worst one ever!

This is the wildest, most unusual case the Chicagoland Detective Agency has ever had! Of course I think I thought that when I read the last case. The weirdness has gotten wiccan weird and wicked fun. If you haven't read any of the Chicagoland detective mysteries, you probably should put them on your list. This mystery is action-packed, humorous, and serious all rolled into one if that can happen (it did). One nice surprise is that James A. Garfield Middle School has a same sex romance going on. Who? I'm not saying so you'll just have to read the book to fine out.

If you're looking for this kind of book, "Grossology " is better than this one, because while it shows the gross stuff that kids like, it also teaches about intrenal body functions and processes that make the book more interesting and more educational.

This book is mostly just gross stuff in our body.

A winner!

I happened upon this series and got 2 books (#3 and #4) for my 8YO son who is a huge Wimpy Kid and Big Nate fan. I decided to try them because they are in a color comic format and he seems to love that. There are couple of experiments in the back.

He said he liked this book just as much as Big Nate!!! He read 2 in one day. :) Can't wait to get him another.
