Meet Beatrice Zinker, who does her best thinking upside down! Hanging from trees by her knees, doing handstands...for Beatrice Zinker, upside down works every time.
She was definitely upside down when she and her best friend, Lenny, agreed to wear matching ninja suits on the first day of third grade. But when Beatrice shows up at school dressed in black, Lenny arrives with a cool new outfit and a cool new friend. Even worse, she seems to have forgotten all about the top-secret operation they planned!
Can Beatrice use her topsy-turvy way of thinking to save the mission, mend their friendship and flip things sunny-side up?

Great edition for our library.
and so much imaginationâthough my favorite thing about Beatrice is her unbreakable spirit
Itâs obvious by the end of the first chapter that Beatrice Zinker is going to be someone kids will remember all throughout their lives. She has an unforgettable wit, spunk, and so much imaginationâthough my favorite thing about Beatrice is her unbreakable spirit. Beatriceâs story shows its readers the âupsidesâ to compromise and the expansion of friend-groups while still preserving individuality, a lesson I found refreshing. Beatrice has an inspiring optimism about her that I found contagious while reading her story. She shows readers the importance of having dreams NOWânot only when youâre olderâand though sometimes expectations need to be managed to achieve them, they are worth pursuing.
As a parent and former teacher, I also appreciated the vocabulary in this book. There are some difficult words for younger readers, but the story is written in a way that makes them attainable. Iâve never read a kid-lit book with the word âreconnaissanceâ in it before, but itâs there and it works and itâs fun. I was also a huge fan of the illustrations. More times that I could count, I found myself laughing at what had to be intentional âEaster eggsâ type nods left by the author for the older reader/parent.
Both my kids (a seven-year-old and a ten-year-old) enjoyed this story immensely and are looking forward to more stories with Beatrice. I would recommend this book for any child with a big imagination!
A lovable misfit moves into 3rd grade
Beatrice Zinker likes to think upside down. Literally. As in hanging from her knees in trees, inverted in chairs, etc. She also thinks upside down figuratively. Meaning she has a different perspective on the world from most, she likes activities many others don't even consider, and she thinks outside the box. Her best friend Lenny totally gets her upside down thinking, as did her 2nd grade teacher who gave her an award for being an Upside Down Thinker. But now she's entering 3rd grade. Mrs Tamarack is not a fan of upside down positions or thinking. She lays down the law for Beatrice right at the start on day one. Beatrice gets 3 warnings and then she can say bye-bye to recess. That may be tough, but what's even more disturbing is that Lenny forgot to wear her ninja outfit for the first day of school. Not only that, but she's hanging out with the new girl Chloe and acting different.
