Definitely a Keeper

A darling tale of a sweetheart of a dragon who would never do anything any harm. But dragons have reputations and his is about to do him in when St. George the dragon slaying knight appears on the scene. How the Boy (he doesn't need a name) solves the predicament is forthright simplicity itself. Children will hold their breath until he's safe at last. Everyone will love the nature of the dragon, the heart of the boy, and the good will of the knight. Grahame knew how to write it and Hauge knew how to draw it. You will adore the dragon the moment you see him if not before. Though there are many pictures, they are so good you wish there were more. A really nice bedtime story that will make for sweet dreams.

Pair it with that old musical "PETE'S DRAGON". And "Puff the Magic Dragon". Oldies but goodies.

This is the real thing

We started with Inga Moore's beautifully illustrated version of The Reluctant Dragon, discovered at the library, but it turned out to be abridged (which does have its advantages for younger readers.) This is the real thing, with the full original text. Kenneth Grahame's witty prose is amusingly penetrating. I had to walk my then 5yo son through it the first time, but he has taken it off and read it by himself many times since. Since he read at a 5th grade level at age 5, he was able to manage many of the nuances for himself after reading it with me once, and it will grow with him as he matures and becomes better able to decipher the intent behind Kenneth Grahame's story.

Meanwhile, I love it myself! It is charming and hilarious, with a satisfyingly happy ending for all (even the badger). Michael Hague's idea of the dragon is not what I would have pictured, making me think of Bilbo and Smaug for some reason, but the rich detail--especially in one of the first full-page illustrations where the boy is reading on his bed--is stunningly gorgeous and makes me want to pore over the book again and again. In addition, though a paperback, the pages are glossy and sturdy and are holding up well.

Definitely recommend this one.

Great fun for Grahame fans

Highly recommended for readers who still appreciate Grahame's writing style. If you can't bear reading Wind in the Willows except in condensed versions, you might not enjoy the fun in this, but it's short & worth your trying. Heroes! Fire-breathing Dragon! Devious doings!

Buyer beware!

This particular print of this book is ridiculous. The cover art is pixelated and looks like it was printed on a home computer. I should have brought the 75th anniversary edition. Buyer beware of this edition:

About a Dragon

I admit that I downloaded this immediately after finishing reading The Wind in the Willows to my daughter. This story is nothing like that, but turned out to be an even better bedtime story (although short. And lacking chapter breaks.)

I like a story with a dragon AND a happy ending.

The kindle edition is just words, I have no complaints.

Good Space Fun - and Way, Way Better Than Expected

I didn't think that the souped up Chevelle-in-space that was on the cover was a good sign. Then we met the really decent poor kid, the spoiled Senator's kid, the shy techy girl, and the hot shot racing girl, all on the way to space camp on the Moon, and I figured this was going to be a campy or cartoony cavalcade of cliches. Well, please excuuuuse me for being such a snot. Turns out that this book, in my now very humbled opinion, was a clever, well written, entertaining and engaging hoot of a middle grade space actioner.

Our hero, Benny, is in fact a decent poor kid. But you know what? That mostly comes across in his appreciation of the neat things he's getting to see and do, and he comes across as steady, resourceful, grounded and practical. He is a remarkably appealing character, with a deadpan sense of humor, and fine as the center of the story. The spoiled kid is not a caricature. Well, he is, but he develops some depth and grows up during the course of the adventure. The shy techy Jazz has some real backbone. Hotshot Grace is girrrrl power with a sense of humor and real skilz, not just a nod to a few girl readers. This is a well conceived and well presented team, and watching them get used to each other and begin to trust and like each other was enjoyable, (and carried an appealing subtle message about friendship and teamwork).

The tech angle was handled well. The reader is perfectly willing to buy the whole mega resort on the Moon set up, and the bigger than life genius-billionaire-adventurer-guru who ran the place was often the butt of sly humor. The supporting characters at the resort, composed mostly of heroic master of the universe types, were also gently sent up. More interesting, though, were all the technical thingies. This is a sort of motor-heads in space story, so that Chevelle wasn't too far off. And all of the other tech that's described or just off-handedly acknowledged should spark the imaginations of most young readers.

There is more of a plot than just "who's the best camper?", what with aliens and invasions and that whole saving the Earth thing, but it's suspenseful and rollicking and action packed and over the top, and so just the thing to spark a high end space adventure. JUST A MILD SPOILER - think along the lines of "Star Wars" and that darn Death Star.

My bottom line was that I thought the whole project was a hoot.

Schlechte ebook-Formatierung

Das Buch an sich ist ja ein Kinderbuch-Klassiker, sofort 5 Sterne verdient hat. Eben deshalb habe ich es mir jetzt als Kindle-Edition gekauft. Und war sehr enttäuscht, denn die Formatierung ist komplett misslungen. Der Text ist fast komplett in Schreibmaschinen-Courier gesetzt, das tut mir richtig in den Augen weh. Ein bisschen mehr Mühe hätte man sich hier schon geben können, dann gäbe ich nicht nur drei Sterne.

Required for a class

The book was required for a German class - but it was funny and well written. I'll keep it for my grandchildren.
