Publisher's Summary:
C2, Zondervan, and World Vision are teaming together on the most ambitious and ecumenical curriculum promoting Christian social responsibility and justice ever conceived. This is a topic that has been building a great deal of buzz within the ranks of Church leadership, but has not yet ignited as an action-based movement among North American Christians. That's 77 million potential Good Samaritans sitting in the pews. And the time is now. The people are ready. The market is ready for the book, START -- becoming a Good Samaritan.
START's headliner curriculum brings together topical experts, theologians, mega-church pastors, front-line workers, victims, encouragers, and even "unknowns" to offer a complete picture of the problem and a practical understanding of how to be a Good Samaritan right now, right where each of us lives.
We are all too painfully aware that the Church today is not known as aGood Samaritan. We're known more as the priest or the Levite from the story - or worse. Rick Warren put his finger on the aching need for this curriculum and book when he said, "It's time for a second reformation, not one of theology, but of works."
Members Reviews:
Incredible, emotional read.
So many Christians I know are stuck. They're trapped in spiritually obese bodies... sitting in pews, taking in sermons, and then going out into the world and behaving like spiritual couch potatoes. It's been a long time since we've put feet to our faith, and instead we find ourselves wallowing around wondering if there's something more.
This book is for us.
Told in a captivating modern-day parable, the authors gently lead us to get up and work out our salvation. As we watch the characters grow, we're motivated to think of people other than our own selves, to find something to care about and to ... move. It reminds us to wake up, to be aware of needs, to love as we are loved.
Entertaining and motivating... beautiful and emotional...challenging and practical
At the risk of sounding trite... it's sort of a 'Biggest Loser' for our souls.
It's time to get started...
Even one person can make a difference
Our world is full of lonely, thirsty, hungry, abused people. Many of us want to help--God inspires our hearts to love our neighbors--but the vastness of the needs can overwhelm us. Where do we start?
That's where Start with Me comes to the rescue. Within the chapters of this current-day parable, it's easy to find ourselves--and our brothers and sisters and parents and kids and best friends. People with good hearts, people who think about doing something, but people who are timid, busy, fearful, and maybe even selfish.
And if you're like me, you wonder if one person could do anything to really make a difference.
The answer is yes. In an aching, needy world, one person can make a difference.
Start with Me provides us with role models: Sam, Luci, Phillip, Elly, Jordan, Jim, and Linda--everyday people living quiet, out-of-the-spotlight lives--who choose to live as Good Samaritans. They don't need to move to Africa or Papua New Guinea to do so--they simply open their eyes and hearts to people in their own neighborhoods.
Even small acts of kindness can make a lot of difference "because suffering is often too great for one man or woman to bear alone. It always has been" (p. 165).
