Bill & Claire's Excellent Adventures

This week, we were meant to be talking Varsity Blues (stay tuned for that next week!), but we got sidetracked with what became a special behind-the-scenes look at how we pick titles for the podcast. Bill & Claire's Excellent Adventures is about expanding Claire's cinematic horizons and it's important I'm not the only curator. She has to learn how to pick titles for herself, too. This ep is how we work through title selection as both father and daughter and also as creative partners. I hope you dig it!

Bill & Claire's Excellent Adventures is back! Claire has spent most of her summer on a swim team, in the water every single day. So, how could our first episode back be anything other than Steven Spielberg's masterpiece - maybe the greatest movie of all time - Jaws? We caught it at our local Alamo Drafthouse and I've never seen someone more into a movie. And to top it off, Danielle is joining us for the conversation! It's good to be back!

#OperationHanksify is back with another rad Penny Marshall film A League of Their Own! And, what's this? Danielle is joining us for a special birthday pick episode! We're gonna need another hashtag. More people, more content, and more Tom Hanks!

We're back to discuss Gurinder Chadha's awesome football flick BEND IT LIKE BECKHAM starring Parminder Nagra and Keira Knightley. This movie does an amazing job showing the challenges of women trying to find their way when their dreams clash with their parents' cultural expectations. We get into who gets to decide success, the impact of systemic racism across generations, and the importance of being you.

Welcome fellow Avengers! We - along with tens of millions of people - headed to the theater last weekend to celebrate the MCU's epic conclusion to the Infinity Saga - a feat longer in the making than Claire has been alive! We dig into our love of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and Endgame. And that leads to some heavy conversations about the value of revenge, crying in public, and the pervasiveness of sexism.

This week, we're [insert sports pun] into sports movies with MAJOR LEAGUE. The movie just had its thirtieth anniversary. So, one, I'm getting old. And two, it's a fun film to ease Claire in the sports movies genres. We get into baseball superstitions and the non-creepy way to reconnect with old friends.

This week, #OperationDanteDive comes to a close with SMALL SOLDIERS. I'm excited to say this is a Claire-requested title. She found out that it was a Dante film and asked to include it in the line-up. We dig into the pursuit of money over mastery of craft and that weird 90s trend of parents just assuming their kids are on drugs for any little reason. Like bloodshot eyes or tales of toy soldiers using power tools to do murder.

Welcome back! This week, #OperationHanksify continues with the 1986 classic: THE MONEY PIT! This is pretty choice Hanks Pratfall territory. Besides, home renovation shows are a staple of family entertainment in our household. And it's a really fun metaphor for working through relationship problems. There're about, oh, say two weeks of conversation topics here.

Last week, we found out Claire really hasn't seen any Tom Hanks movies. So, we pivoted from #OperationDanteDive to #OperationHanksify with Penny Marshall's 1988 masterpiece BIG! Claire is the perfect age for this film and her commentary does not disappoint. This chat was an absolute joy for me as a parent. Check it out!

Two weeks ago we checked out INNERSPACE. Then we took a break to take on the MCU's latest installment, CAPTAIN MARVEL (it was great!). We're back onto Joe Dante with his merciless takedown of the aimless paranoia of suburban life: THE 'BURBS! Claire reveals to me for the first time the history of police activity on our block and what to do in case of Finger Guns at school. You never can tell where a suburban door is going to take you!
