Hamilton’s physical distancing bylaw lapsed at the end of July, without much fanfare. But yesterday, city council voted to reinstate it, and the $500 fines that you could be subject to if you get too close. Things are different now, compared to the state of the pandemic when the bylaw was first enacted in April: now we have social circles of 10, restaurants you can eat inside of, and outdoor gathering of up to 100 distanced people.

Yesterday, Education Minister Stephen Lecce said school boards will be allowed to access $500 million of their own reserve funds to achieve physical distancing in classrooms. The government also plans to spend $50 million to update school ventilation systems, and $18 million to hire principals and support staff to administer online learning. Tensions have been escalating between the government and teachers’ unions, along with concern, as we head toward the start of the school year and a return to classrooms. Did Lecce’s announcement assuage fears and smooth out rough parts of the back-to-school plans?
