Thirty years ago today, a little TV show called Friday the 13th the Series aired for the first time (...in Canada, it didn't show up in the US till October 3.) It was scandalously gory and violent for network TV at the time, and ended up being nominated for several Emmys, and we adored it. We'd make lists of all the cursed objects we could remember, wear out our VHS copies (...shut up...) and write fanfiction (shut UP) where Micki and Ryan finally got together.

Listen in as we break down a few of our favorite episodes, racing the clock to get in as much fangirling as possible.

Since there's no Night Vale to recap this week we figured we'd just talk about everything else, starting with our family in the path of Hurricane Irma (spoilers: they're fine) and upcoming travel plans that are making our recording schedule interesting.

After that we talk about a Transformers game that Kathryn's ridiculously addicted to very enthusiastic about and she'd like you to play too so she can get more points you can enjoy it as well. Then we discuss why we haven't finished watching Defenders yet, and it has something to do with this Netflix show about drug deals, we won't say which, but it rhymes with "Narcos" and it's (appropriately) addictive.

Also we try to talk briefly about this amazing 80's show called Friday the 13th the Series, and fail. To talk briefly. We even had "BRIEFLY" written in our notes and underlined and we still went on and on.

So get this: in two weeks it'll be the 30th anniversary of Friday the 13th the Series and NO that's not the horror movie with the mask, it's the TV show with the cursed antiques and amazing hair. In celebration of that (and the fact that we have to take a week off of recording) next week's "podcast" will be a photo gallery of everything we can find related to the show: screen grabs, advertisements, fan art (what there is of it,) you name it, if we can yoink it out of the internet, it'll be here. The week after that will be a whole episode of us fangirling all over the place since someone's uploaded every episode of the show to youtube and it's still amazing. And awful. And awesome.

It’s a nice rambly podcast this week, first with a Night Vale recap where Cecil talks about eclipses you can’t see from this planet and then gets stuck in his own recording booth. And then Elizabeth drags the podcast off on not one but TWO tangents, once about mythical two-headed snakes and another about alien tourists on Earth. And finally a segue into the Defenders, John Barrowman’s awesome DragonCon cosplay, sand castles, Lady Killer, Motor Girl, conventions, Cabin in the Woods, and “My Dad Wrote a Porno.”

Correction the first: after going on and on about how cool the poem “Amphisbaena” is, it might’ve been nice to actually mention what it is. It’s a snake with a head at each end. There you go. (We were also probably pronouncing it incorrectly, it’s “Am-fis-BEAN-uh” not “Am-fis-BEAM-uh.”

Correction the second: C.J. Cherryh’s real name is Carolyn Janice Cherry, and she pronounces it “Cherry,” she added the H because of the whole “we need you to use a name that doesn’t sound feminine” thing. Don’t get us started.

Correction the third: Elizabeth said she read Lady Killers. She meant Lady KILLER, singular. And it’s by Joëlle Jones, since we can never remember to say her whole name ON the podcast.

Time for the season finale of Alice Isn't Dead! As you can tell from the title, things get a little introspective and quickly turn very grim. We got to hear how Kesha met Alice (randomly), how they fell in love (quirkily and sweetly and not at all what Kesha had planned), and then how maybe, just maybe, it all might have been a lie.

Then Kathryn lightens the mood by talking about a very fun Board Games Night (if you're curious, the games were Snake Oil, Codenames, and Mysterium, which you really need to try), and Elizabeth talks about how her hand-drawn Tarot deck is coming along, and did you know there's a database of different Tarot decks?

Correction: The game of trying to pick the right word that I referred to in the podcast as "Codeword" obviously made a huge impression on me, seeing as how I got the name wrong. It's actually "Codenames". Or IS it? No, it totally is.

Correction the second: Elizabeth said LearnTarot.com had a directory of tarot cards, and they do! She said there's at least five different cat tarot card decks, and there are! However, LearnTarot.com only lists one of the cat decks, Elizabeth found the rest on a completely different site when she went searching for them. For, uh, research. Yeah. This week's episode of Night Vale was less of an episode and more of a little present for everybody who's been a fan of the show since the beginning. It’s the San Diego Comic-Con 2017 wrap up! And we’re TIRED.

Join the twins and Official Binary System Photographer Captain Slack (otherwise known as Kathryn’s husband Nathan) as we kick back the Sunday night after Comic-Con, a little goofy from sensory overload and possible some saké, and discuss the cosplay, the celebrity (sort of) sightings, the events we saw, the stuff we bought, and the crowds we survived.

Correction the first: the Dark Horse Comics "Artists Who Write" panel featured Joëlle Jones (Lady Killer), Larry Marder (Beanworld), and Adam Warren (Empowered.) You should definitely check out all of that.

Correction the second: the actress Elizabeth got a glimpse of on the Comic-Con floor was Deborah Ann Woll, who's very talented and has been in a lot of things and really deserves to have her name remembered in a podcast.

Correction the third: the second writer on the Transformers: First Strike title is David Rodriguez, who is also very nice and also deserves to have HIS name remembered in a podcast.

This week Welcome to Night Vale demonstrated once again that they don’t understand the meaning of the word “hiatus” because they gave us both an excerpt from the upcoming Night Vale book It Devours, AND a teaser for the new “Conversations With People Who Hate Me” podcast. This brings up one of the few times that the twins come down on opposite sides of an issue, because Kathryn likes to read the comment threads of news articles to find the rare moments of intelligent discussion and well-worded viewpoints, and Elizabeth doesn’t because she thinks they’re cesspits of humanity.

After that they nerd out about Saga for a bit (the cover to issue 44 is all kinds of neat) and then spell out their plans for this year’s San Diego Comic-Con! They’ll both be there, along with Official Binary System Photographer Captain Slack (otherwise known as Kathryn’s husband Nathan) to do some interviews, take a pile of photos, and report back on Nerd Mecca. Of course while trying to do a recap we go off on tangents about people who mine wikipedia for the best stuff, and about what a modern day oracle would look like (they probably wouldn’t be wearing greek robes in a cave, most likely a hoodie in an abandoned van) and about why you can’t eat the oranges on the ASU campus.

Correction the first - more like an addendum really: turns out the sour oranges on the ASU campus (which have traditionally been used as a "oh you should totally eat one of those" prank on freshmen) are now being used as part of their "Campus Harvest" program, and can be made into marmalade, vinaigrettes, and drinks! Correction the second - Elizabeth said Leland had mentioned a Killian Murphy with a K. This of course is completely wrong. Leland had mentioned a talented actor named Killian Scott but Elizabeth tacked the “Murphy” onto the end because words just drop out of her mouth without her brain being aware, happens all the time.
