Every once in awhile, I like to use this podcast to indulge myself. What am I talking about, this show is ALL about indulging myself. But when I recently looked back on the three or so years that I have been a part of Binge, I realized that while I have covered a few of the major horror franchises of our time (Nightmare on Elm Street, Child's Play) I never really dedicated a FULL show to the whole horror genre. Until now.

But I couldn't do that monstrous (see what I did there?) task alone. I decided to give the big film brain on Matt (Goudreau) a rest this week in order to bring on someone who knows the horror genre through and through. Mostly because she has lived it, both growing up and in front of the camera. I am talking about horror hostess and scream queen, Ms Jennifer Nangle.

Things get off to a rocky start as I unload grievances about how we came to this point when it comes to watching her work. But from then on out, Ms Nangle and I have a constructive conversation about her growing up, and of course I gravitated toward stories of how she lived in a haunted house until she was six.

We then move on to talk about the horror genre from the 90s to this point, and things get feisty when a few of the films discussed (hint: at least one is pictured below) nearly leads to blows. But before Nangle had the chance to cast a spell on and kill me, things calm down and throughout the conversation, we pepper in talk about Wes Craven, how tough a job producing can be, and what's next for the horror genre.

In all seriousness, this was a fun as hell podcast to record, and I would love for Ms Nangle to come back, maybe do a podcast with me on the air. But what should we watch?

Just because he didn't have another feature film in the interim between 1993 and 2014 doesn't mean Robocop disappeared. Two TV shows, two cartoons, and four Prime Directive cable films filled the void, and we start this podcast off discussing their quote unquote quality.

But it doesn't take long for us to get what we're REALLY here for. And that is discussing one of the most polarizing remakes to have ever been made. With Alex Ancira favorite Joel Kinneman wearing the suit, studio executives felt it was time to unveil a new Robocop. While the majority of fans and critics alike agreed that it would have been the kiss of death to try and out extreme Paul Verhoeven, me, Matt, and Batch discuss whether the direction of Jose Padilha (Elite Squad) was enough to push this character into a successful new direction.

And we thought last week was going to be the lowest the doldrums of this franchise could go. It's no secret that once Robocop 2 came and went, the franchise was in trouble. Yet, this same sentiment could be said for the studio housing it. Orion Pictures, a film studio which thrived on the artistry of forward thinking filmmakers such as Oliver Stone and James Cameron, was in financial ruin. Unable to back the franchise they pumped so much money into, the studio filmed Robocop's third sequel, with The Monster Squad's Fred Dekker behind the camera, in 1991. And then quickly stonewalled, leaving the film on the shelf until someone else could back its release.

Enter MGM. But could the fact that Robocop 3 was released in November of 1993 mean victory for its makers? That's what me, Batch, and Matthew Goudreau discuss. Though do you REALLY need us here to answer that question for you?
